Wait! If you're standing in the condu... oh... that's the Engineer's place in the back, right?

nope! it's conductor's place. Driver cab is in frontal part of car. Conductor had this "tribune" near middle door, and there was emergency brake valve, door control valves and signal system. But later, cars was produced without this booth.
