The plan IIRC for most Tanuki types was to be filled with food to be cooked, and scamper away with a nicely full tummy before they can be put over a fire

Particularly in Johnny's icon, the screening comes off great. You should distress it a little and make the colors a little off-center to drive home the effect. XD
