And a general explaination. The Flt Sgt. and his plane is something of an orphan, in that his wartime unit has been dissolved, but he is still being tasked for missions. But he doesn't have his own unit level support, meaning routine servicing isn't getting done. He is also largely out of the local chain of command. Overall, he costs the base in resources but isn't on the allotment, so is considered something of a parasite.
Actually, most pilots, most of the time are really good about prep. Military pilots in war time, if they trust they support crews, sometimes became a bit complacent, with variations of "kick the tires and light the fires and last one off is a sissy", along with the notion of a mechanical abort could be construed as more a loss of combat nerves than real concern about the machine's status. Our Flt. Sgt. has, among other things, fallen into the complacency of familiarity. The plane has always worked before, even in iffy circumstance, so why won't it work again on a cake walk. An attitude reenforced by the seemingly bullet-proof nature of more reliable X-generation turbines versus finicky piston types or iffy first generation turbines. And he is in a generally really bad mood.
I'm in an over-reacting cranky mood this morning, but even knowing that, I'm going to go off on a rant- though not nessisarily directed at you-
Why do so many people double down on their errors or some such instead of acknowledging the mistake? Or not simply dropping it? Actually, I know the answer- its just frustrating to see so often. (and recon flew solo even in wartime, again, wingmen were for fighters looking for a fight.)
