I did NOT say it wasn't pixel art; I said using a soft brush isn't pixel art. This is because a soft brush adds colors the artist didn't pick themselves, and makes for a very bloated palette. I wasn't trying to insult her, so you don't need to come rushing to her defense like that.
I know people seldom actually give constructive critisism on this site, but dear God, is it so unheard of that people automatically take it as an attack? Honestly, I'm the one who should be offended here, because you're accusing me of insulting an artist when I'm just trying to help, and you twisted my words at that.

I'm quite sure that they were not looking for critique, constructive or otherwise. Even if your intention was just to help, the way you spoke to the artist was quite snarky, and even if it's your opinion, you cannot tell another person "using a soft brush isn't pixel art". Maybe it isn't by your definition, but there are other ways of doing things than just your way.
I was not being snarky at all! Have you studied pixel art? I doubt it, otherwise you'd know that soft brushes aren't supposed to be used. Heck, I even explained why. This isn't a matter of opinion; it's a fact. Pixel art has its rules and standards, just like any other art form.
And it doesn't matter if you think they were looking for critique or not. If someone doesn't want critique, they shouldn't post their art anywhere. But if people don't get critique, they'll never improve.
I know damn well that there are other ways of doing things, but don't try and tell me not to tell someone a fact, especially when I'm trying to help. All you did was call me out, and then turn to the artist and nurture their wounded pride to make yourself look better. You're being a dick to someone who's just trying to help, and then you have the balls to say I'm wrong when any other experienced pixel artist would tell you otherwise. You clearly have no experience in the matter, so why don't you just shove off and stop trying to be such a white knight?

Just because someone posts art somewhere, it does not give you the right to boss them about, just because you think you're more qualified than they are. And you're making assumptions about my experience with pixel art, and that's something I don't appreciate.
You don't seem to understand that what you said was rude, and trying to explain it further is like trying to talk to a brick wall.

I'm sorry for swearing, but I'm just frustrated at being verbally attacked after trying to give someone advice. I was not trying to insult her or boss her around, and I even pointed out what was right with the picture and gave it a fave. And, honestly, I'm not used to dealing with this kind of reaction, because I've given similar critique to many pieces of pixel art, and I've never been attacked for it, let alone by someone who didn't even make the image in question. Why are you so determined to make me into a bad guy here? I am trying to help. What are you trying to accomplish? Heck, Toffy hasn't even said anything further, which tells me she's either accepted my advice or decided it's not worth arguing over, but you keep twisting my words and trying to make me look like some pixel snob or something. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings; I'm just sharing information I learned from people who are far better spriters than me. I used to be very against criticism myself back then, but I came to understand that they really had the best intentions and wanted me to improve, and thanks to them, I did. I'm no master of the art, but I'd at least admit I'm decent enough that I can help others. So will you at least accept that I'm just trying to help and get off my back?
Simply adding a ton of colors doesn't add depth. Coming from the people who taught me pixel art at the VG Resource, the object is to do more with less, which is why smaller palettes are preferred. That, and too many colors can make your piece look flat and less detailed than if you'd used less and textured it manually. The depth here comes from how you shaded it, not from the use of many colors.
I'm not trying to insult you, and I'm sorry if I came off like that; I was just trying to help you improve. There are good points, like the lines are very smooth, and the shading shows a definite light source. I understand the desire for anti-aliasing, and it's very popular among pixel artists, but you shouldn't go overboard.
