That's because people over the centuries have bastardized the saying into 'Never cross a black cat's path', and think they're bad luck. Black cats tend to be wonderfully social, only slightly modified by their breed. Bhaey, the resident Black in our house, is 'talking dirty' to a squirrel outside my window right now hehe.
