My interpretation:

You want to be able to open up and show your true self, but the society we live in is saying you're not allowed to be who you really are, that you have to be "normal."

I'll say you aren't far off! It's less society; more all people in general. I'm isolated and alone in a sea of individuals, and the idea of not being able to share my true self leaves me feeling rather empty and cold. Not a great feeling!
