It's a North Indian instrument used in classical music, Ken-jo. It has a tonal quality is slightly similar to that of a banjo, but with MUCH more sustain. There is a lot of pitch-bending and sliding effects, as the player uses their fingernail as a slide against the chrome-plated steel neck.
