The amber is sort of symbolic of memory (ie they are the collected souls/memories of those burned by the flames of his passing)

This is probably a really dumb question, but it's been bugging me for a while now... how do you make these perfect circles? ;_;

lasso tool XD! I usually do several layers and paint around the edges, stacking the layers and slightly diff size circles to create a more painted effect.

Lasso? :o Do you mean the marquee tool or do you really freehand them with the lasso o.o

gosh yes I meant the elliptical marquee (press shift to make perfect circles). I can't imagine making perfect circles by hand!!!
