Around 1000 years after Sokol was born technology has moved forward... blah blah... scientists had found a great sort of thingy in plankton that pregnant mothers should take supplements of because it lowers the risk of birth defects to below 10%, but funnily enough, the generations born after this supplement was being used were born with areas of skin that would glow during periods of excitement.

By the time Jimmy is born, most Kurvids have mastered the control of their spots.

Almost all the time these spots are the same color as the rest of the skin, until periods of high excitement, or until the Kurvid ingests a dose of the plankton supplement. It's a harmless substance that works much like an energy drink, and it also makes the spots glow.
