Short quick rant on a subject thats been annoying whenever i see it. I Don't get the hate for "50 Shades of Grey" now that its been released in movie format. all the picketing and "Boycott this movie" makes absolutely no sense to me. Even if people use the excuse of "its a book about an abusive relationship"...so was twilight..."it misrepresents BDSM and the bondage Community and fetish"...So did twilight...with vampires (not entirely the same thing but its still a fantasy with roots) .... "its a bad book / movie!"...I rest my case.

Dunno, if something displeases me I try to ignore it, even if it is bursting with a large popularity at the time.
That's the times when it's important to calm yourself with the things you find worth spending your time on.
If people like it and it makes 'em happy, I'm all for that. But shoving it on others or brewing a thunderstorm in a glass of water is just uncalled for. It's just a book, it's just a movie, it's made for entertaining purposes, that's it. Take it or leave it, that's all there is to it.

I didn't like either series in the slightest because of both premises, I read through all of them and sat there going "Why on earth is this a thing and why is it so popular?" and with Twilight I can see why people didn't wanna say anything or do anything about it. It wasn't so much geared towards the audience(s) that 50 Shades is and it was also during a time where these sorts of issues didn't exactly make the internet head lines that they do now. There's was a sort of latency when it came to those books and if 50 shades came out around that time it probably would have gotten the same kind of moral/ethical backlash. There was also the whole "Fantasy" aspect of Twilight with the whole vampire and werewolf thing that that made it seem completely childlike and you could bat an eye to that. I'm not saying that's right in the slightest but people are just really dumb in making the assumption that "Oh it's about vampires and werewolves, oh well doesn't have anything that could apply to reality in the slightest!"
Now with 50 Shades we get a more adult viewing because it's an erotic novel and it's got a lot of adult themes and guess who's going to read into that shit, the same people that love to pick and choose battles despite the same fight needing to be fought somewhere else. And you're right, it's 100% aimed towards women and it seems like that demographic is the one that's tearing into itself again and again. Lots of women love the books for their "erotic" nature, let's not mention the women that brought veggies to a showing to pleasure themselves in the middle of the showing and what not but on the same side a lot of women are up in arms about it being a horridly inaccurate showing of the BDSM community which doesn't really get much light to be taken as seriously as those people want it too. All in all Twilight was bad, 50 Shades was bad; movie, books and themes alike. People just don't get so up in arms about it until it's gotten popular and mainstream because that's when they feel like their opinions will matter the most. Attention whoring? Maybe not 100% but a good majority of it is.

huh...this is true. I hadnt thought about the relevance in the times they were posted. but then again they were relatively close together. Twilight movies were still being made while 50 shades the book was already published. But they stopped a couple of years before women have made their issues mainstream. Either way it is interesting.
It is isn't it? You kind of just have to sort of sit back and look at the trends of how things go. The books and the movies were in that time before women's issue and feminism became a mainstream issue and before we became very analytically about what's portrayed in different media.
Just you wait, there's gonna be an "Art for Art's Sake" movement in 5 years. Callin' it now!

First, love your voice and the way you speak, ^^
Second, I agree with everything you said. Whether or not its just a book/movie for women (which it is mostly), its fantasy and it shouldn't be taken seriously. No reason for overblown drama that doesn't matter, cause it is FANTASY! Yes they might of gotten somethings wrong but unless it ends up effecting said people in RL, don't worry about it, right?

I think people mainly get on about it because "it's softcore porn being released in public theaters". Which, I guess in most cases, I -could- agree that it probably shouldn't hit the public. But at the same time, for personal thoughts? ...I can't be bothered to really care enough about the series at all. Don't get me wrong, I like me some kinky stuff here and there, but, you know, that's for ME! I don't really care who else does it or not, cuz I'm not interested about another person's life like that.
So yeah, that's my take on it, I guess.

The only thing I know about all this is that 50 shades is a book turned into a movie about a billionaire with a sex dungeon and talks some shy girl into it
(by the way if he wasn't a billionaire he'd be considered some creepy pervert)
And I know the controversy? is present
And basically the whole ordeal is similar to what happened when 9 1/2 Weeks came out
AAAAAAAAAnd I couldn't care less, and I only know this stuff because I got it from "walking past the gossip room" so to speak

My biggest qualm is how 50 Shades was originally a Twilight fanfic.
As a writer myself who's been working hard on a book for years with ever changing concepts and material being added constantly in regards to how large in scale the world in it is (yes it's Tolkien-style fantasy), I feel offended. Not just for myself but for my fellow writers who are working or have worked hard on great stories, and they're being ignored over a fanfic about a travesty of a literary work.
Someone's fanfiction is getting the treatment given to titles like Nineteen Eighty-Four, Lord of the Rings and Red Dragon just to name a few. And these are novels that their writers worked on hard for several years and their skills as storytellers were amazing. E. L. James can't even grasp how to write simple narration and it comes out as melodramatic jumbles or oxymorons.
So yea; E. L. James, go f*ck yourself with a thirteen inch thick steel rod.

The plots between the two were largely different. Both are trash but in one it's rooted in fantasy with a completely different theme of a retarded vampire controlling someone that he was trying not to kill, and being abusive. It was however, not LITERALLY abusive. Like, there's actual rape scenarios 50 shades that are being glossed over to seem romantic, taking advantage of a virgin, getting her liquored up in an attempt to get her to sign a BDSM sex contract in order to validate his abuse because she "agreed" to it. And that's why people are uppity about it in the BDSM community, it makes a mockery of it.
Also there was no BDSM or rape in Twilight. Twilight is pretty terrible but not on the same level. And why people are upset is because it's romanticizing the literal cycle of an abusive relationship all through the series, from him stalking her to him physically hurting her, him apologizing, there being a period of romance where she thinks he can be "fixed", and then it just blows up again.
In the end, it's fiction. It's like junk food. Simple to read, fanfic-quality smut. And as an adult, I can believe and know it's fiction, I'm responsible, I know it's not the marker for a BDSM lifestyle or anything to aspire to.
The people that it's hurting are the people that get into BDSM as a RESULT of it, or think that this kind of behavior is okay. Granted, those people aren't the smartest but it's prevalent. And abuse is a serious issue. It being romanticized isn't a joking matter, and that's the biggest issue that everyone is trying to get across with the boycotting. Not that it matters, people will do what they want to do.
In the end it's just people being seriously uncomfortable with the message it's sending out. Sure, it's just a book/movie/story. But on the other hand, a story can do a lot of damage, inspire a lot of people, and foster ways of thinking that aren't always considered right or moral. It gets to a point where you have to choose between blaming the person that reads or sees these things and making it into a lifestyle or using it to validate their life in some way, or the writer for taking a work of fiction and using it to romanticize an abusive relationship.
Also the difference between Twilight and 50 Shades is the writer of Twilight was all about the whole Mormon background thing, using it as inspiration for limiting what Bella could do and then the whole "living together forever" thing rooted in the belief that their souls would be together forever which is evidently apart of the mormon religion. The other is all about kinkery, utterly and completely, and it's just really poorly represented.
That being said I APOLOGIZE FOR THIS MASSIVE BLOCK OF TEXT.

I'm pretty much in the "I don't care" crowd. Its as you said its just a fucking book that just so happened to get popular enough to have a film based on it that's all. I'm not gonna read it or watch it to and its not worth the anger over something you can easily go on any given fanfic site and it will have the same thing this and Twilight has.
I'm a guy and know nothing about the book or movie because I find none of it interesting. So I can't exactly comment on it.
I only know about bits and pieces of Twilight since took fictional horror characters and turned them into teen girl heartthrobs. I find that utterly ridiculous.
As far as fetishes are concerned I'm in agreement with you Daigo. As a furry its nothing new to us.

As someone who is an active member of the BDSM community it's not really the best...
I didn't see the book until a friend asked me if that's the way this was. It's rather shitily written but it's been so embraced so much that people have been acting out scenes from the movie ....and KILLING EACH OTHER. There has been three deaths and 25 predatory RAPES verbatim from the book. It's a book that has been used in the defense of the deli bus rapes where the woman was bludgeoned to death with a steel pipe after being gang raped by six men. Stupid people cant tell the difference from the sex and the fantasy. Bondage contracts usually go over health and safety first. and really have nothing to do with some of the shenanigans that goes on in the book.
As a Dom the thing that scares me is safety. No matter what happens safety comes paramount. It's heartbreaking that KIDS are getting into their parents books and reading into this and normalizing them self with the identification that it's normal to have something hurt and be absolutely painful and have no say over what is going on with their body. it sets up a terribly abusive circle of perpetuated misconception. So much so that i ran into a psychotic fuck at a con who was trying to quote fifty shades in conjunction to the BDSM community. I tried to do my best to explain how it works even going to the point of getting a regular of mine that was at the con and showing the steps of warming up. the act and afterwords the aftercare that goes into a BDSM session. Sadly this mentally off put person spiked my drink and tried to have their way with me. I threw them across the room and talked to con security about it.
and twilight was written with the endorsement of the Mormon church ...i know too much.
follow up rant ...gothy

But in all seriousness, I thank you for your input. Like my biggest gripe and why i made this was because i was more more so wanting to understand why people were picketing this when i find twilight equally as offensive (the severity of abuse doesnt change the fact that its abuse, be it mental or physical) and not something young teen girls should aspire to. Though I guess I just take slight issue with people calling the book dangerous as well.
Yeah the book "romanticizes" abuse and only until recently had i learned that apparently its under the guise of BDSM. All valid criticisms and agreed it should be noted and disclosed, but the way i see it is that its no more Dangerous than video games and or television. Anything popular is bound to bring out the crazies and there is NOTHING we can do about that. Like the fools who injure and kill themselves trying to replicate the wrestling moves from WWE. The difference here is that I wont blame the WWE for stupid peoples foolishness. So i wont blame 50 shades either.
This in now way says I'm condemning the hate for this book / film because I agree with getting the proper word out. I will agree that its poisonous to impressionable people wanting relationships. Same with twilight. i just hope garbage like this continues to get the same treatment and NOT go under like twilight did. Least like twilight did to me. if it doesnt happen then its time to just soak it up and join the club of highly misrepresented fetishes. Furries know to well how that feels.
Also , sorry to hear you had to deal with a fucking nutjob at a con like that. ...

Nut jobs come nut jobsgo. You realm have to have something missing yi mess with the gothic lolita that trained with Marines in Iraq. Small enough con ever one knew me.
I know I know media vs the mind. But tom Clancys seal team six was never sexualized then pushed off as a puff piece. My problem is that its abuse that's down played into a niche category so then when the abuse is mimicked and people die its down played. I mean how many murder rapes involve getting dressed up like snake and hiding in a card board box after the premier I any snake title...... None. Hoe many people have been erotically asphyxiated or garroted on silk panty hose while being tied up with condoms using their own underwear as a gag that ends up killing the person in question? One is frankly too many. The fact that over 25 have been reported to law enforcement in the opening week turns my stomach.
People dont do his for fictional jollies its being done in real life with people who are to stupid to difarenciate between what a human body is capable le of under stress. Fantasy that sounds plausibly realistic enough for anyone to do can be dangerous. More so when someone asks to stop and just like the book they don't because she liked it in the end.
