The british had an extensive array of commercial steam vans. really wiold tech, that didnt' survive long past WW2.

Ironically, I didn't know steam vans were a real thing. I figured they were merely plausable and went from there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_wagon This has some nice pictures of various types. But apparently it was a combination of fuel costs, and Government taxation at the request of the railroads that doomed them. But they were a thing.

Really not much different from a steam Traction Engine; just built to haul freight instead of plows. The Brits kept up their Traction Engines longer -- and preserved more of them -- than we Americans did. Dammit.
