Continuing my (belated) "Throwback Thursday" presentation, I have the second of two 'photo-ops' taken at "Calle Ocho" in March of 2007 (shortly after my termination as a 'toll collector' - a job I could never get back again, now that all toll roads in Florida use the SunPass prepaid toll program)...
I had been to "Calle Ocho" (which is Spanish for 8th Street) several times, since moving down to Florida. Most of the time, I would be accompanied by
Funimal, but that year, I was on my own. Taking in the annual 'Little Havana' event, I was able to pick up a lot of 'free samples' from its sponsors, and I got to eat some of the Latino food fare (such as piaya and tortillas).
I got to see and hear live musical performances on stands situated on every other block, and visitors from all walks of life (from Canadian 'snow birds' to South American tourists to folks visiting as far away as Europe and eastern Asia) - wearing colorful clothing, and taking snapshots of anything and everything!
I was no exception, as I had my own camera with me. Two of the 'photo-ops' I'd taken at "Calle Ocho" involved these giant six-foot-tall rooster statues (decorated by local residents). Here is the second of these two statues...
This time, we have a rooster done up like a school teacher - trying to set an example for his students, by wearing a white shirt and a necktie!
I haven't been to "Calle Ocho" since 2007, but I might still try to take it in this year - even if it means taking a bus, Tri-Rail, and a MetroRail train to get there (since I no longer have a car and a driver's license).
If any of you plan to be in south Florida on Sunday, March 15, 2015, I'd highly recommend taking in "Calle Ocho". Just bring your camera... and a very healthy appetite!
