I'd think the most obvious answer would be if an AI program desires a physical relationship with someone, having the avatar able to do that would be a lot less unfortunate than a giant ship trying to hump a space station while a group of observing admirals fill out forms to have the AI researchers shot, cloned and shot again.
Interesting philosophical dilemma. How would an android know what "normal" would feel like? And what is "normal"? Just what she perceives organic beings to be like? Even then, sapient anthros (humans in reality) are the most diverse form of life we currently know; what is normal to many cultures is completely absurd or even backward in others. How would an android figure out what is normal, and would they conclude that it's good to be "normal" or just celebrate what makes them relatable yet unique? :)
