tbh I don't even get what a digital painting is?? Is it just using color swatches & staying on one layer instead of like cell shading & stuff??

yeah, digital painting is -usually- confined to less layers than cel shaded work but not necessarily so. it's just a lot more detailed or refined than most other pieces of work. again that's typically, not always necessarily.

erm like, traditional painting methods are often carried over to the digital medium. so largely digital paintings are in a sense to replicate the effects achieved with traditional paints and canvases

I'd say for a first go at digital painting, this is really good! I can see you've got a solid grasp on your own unique painting style and I think you should refine it a bit more.
Criticisms? Not many, truthfully. I'd just say experiment around a bunch and find what works for you! The biggest thing I see in this picture that could use improvement is, perhaps, the light sources but that's all I've got. Fantastic work either way :D
