THE GIRL NEXT DOOR
__________________________________________________________________
“Today is just another regular day,” thought Kelly as she picked up her backpack and got off the school bus. Walking towards to the school building, someone ran across right in front of her and knocked her books out of her hands. “Hey watch it!” she shouted. Walking back, a young teen came bending over to help pick up her books.
“I’m sorry, I was in a rush,” said the girl.
“Well, its alright I guess” replied Kelly.
“My name is Amy, what’s your name?” asked Amy as she was handing Kelly her books. Smiling, Kelly replied “I’m Kelly, very nice to meet you Amy” she replied. Then the bell rang.
“Oh! That’s the bell, I’ll see you during break time” said Amy and with that she ran off to class. “What’s her rush? It isn’t like we are going to be late for class,” thought Kelly as she walked towards to class.
Arriving to class she sat down and started reading her textbook and watching the clock. Ring! Ring! The bell rang so she packed up her books and went to stand around in the field waiting for Amy. “Hey! What are you doing? Put me down!” a voice shouted from the corner of the school building. Curiously Kelly peered over. There was Amy, picking up a poor kid who was wearing a red Yankees cap by the collar of his shirt and she was glaring at him.
“Amy! What on earth are you doing? Put him down!” shouted Kelly as she ran over. Thump! The kid landed on the ground and without looking he ran away. Looking angrily at the boy running away, Amy shouted, “You hurt the birds again and I’ll make you wish you hadn’t done that!”
“Amy, what was that for?” Kelly said rather angrily. Huffing angrily, Amy took one last glare at the running figure of the boy before turning to look at Kelly.
“He was throwing sticks at a nest with baby birds in it” Amy said fiercely while pointing towards a partially broken nest in the tree. “Well, at least the whole nest didn’t break,” pointed out Kelly.
“Well? It could have broken if I didn’t get here on time!” growled Amy who was still upset over the whole thing. And for a brief moment Kelly saw such a look in Amy’s eyes that made her look really unfriendly. Wanting to change the subject, Kelly asked, “So, where do you live?”
As if a switch had turned off, Amy answered cheerfully saying, “Oh, I live in house 23.”
“Wow really? I live in house 24, we are neighbors!” Kelly said excitingly. A few hours later it was soon time to go home for the weekend. Sitting on the bus, Kelly thought about all that has happened. When she got home she finished writing her homework and went to sleep.
The next week, she woke up and went to school. A note has been posted on all the doors and school bulletins. The note said “Missing: Kenny McCarthy, Age: 15, Grade: 9, Clothes: Red Yankees Cap, white T-shirt, blue jeans, red and white sneakers, Last seen: Friday.” Not thinking much of it, Kelly went to class. On the next break, going out to the field again, she heard, “So what? It’s just a stupid animal, like I even care! Now leave me alone!” Sighing, Kelly peered over and saw Amy glaring and cornering a large teen who looked about 17, and was wearing a money sign chain bling around his neck. Walking over and putting a hand on Amy, Kelly said, “What is up this time?” Whirling around angrily Amy said. “This kid is throwing sticks at a three legged puppy!”
“Like I even care!” shouted the boy as he ran off.
“You’re a good friend but you really have to stop this, you understand?” said Kelly.
Okay fine, you want to come to my home tomorrow?” suggested Amy. “Okay, I will go over to your house,” replied Kelly.
“Wait, I got to do something,” said Amy, and with that she ran towards the boy holding a bag of chocolate and she dumped something into the chocolate out of a bottle, but the label was too small for Kelly to read. “Hey you! Wait up!” she shouted after the boy.
The next day, as Kelly arrived at school, a new note had been posted on all the doors and bulletins next to the old one, and it said “Derek Mills, age 17 had been found dead at his home, death is currently unknown and an autopsy is being confucted” Looking at the colored picture at the bottom of the note was a teenaged boy wearing a chain necklace bling with a money sign on it.
“Good Morning!” said a voice. Looking around Kelly saw Amy.
“You know anything about this?” Kelly asked carefully while pointing to the note.
Peering at the picture Amy shrugged and said “I don’t know, probably the guy been testing out drugs or something, well anyway, I’m headed to class. And since your coming over to my home today I’ll pick you up after school, we can ride on my bike since it isn’t that far”.
“Okay” agreed Kelly as they both went off to class. After school Amy was waiting outside the school sitting on a black bike with yellow stripes. “Hop on!” Amy said cheerfully, and Kelly hopped on. After a few minutes of riding they stopped at a large house, and then they walked in. “I forgot to tell my parents I am coming here,” remembered Kelly.
“Its alright, you live next door, not like you are going to like walk hours just to get home, it’s nothing to worry about” mentioned Amy.
Agreeing to the idea Kelly followed Amy into her room. “It is so quiet in your house” said Kelly.
“Yeah it is, I live alone with just me and my dad, no siblings,” mentioned Amy. “Wow, you must be lonely” Kelly said in awe.
Shrugging Amy said, “Nah, it is alright, it’s easy to get used to”. Amy went out the room to get some drinks. Exploring around, Kelly saw some pictures of Amy and her dad, and Amy surrounded by many animals. Some stuffed animal toys were sitting around on the shelves, and they looked so real. Feeling a stuffed bunny, Kelly suddenly freaked out, because it was a real bunny that had died and been stuffed.
“That’s Cotton, my old pet bunny, I didn’t want to bury her so I stuffed her so she will always be with me, and the rest of the animals are my pets too” said Amy who came walking up behind her, holding a tray of apple juice. Not saying anything Kelly helped herself to a cup of apple juice. After they had finished drinking Amy took the empty cups and walked back downstairs to the kitchen.
Exploring around again, Kelly opened a closet, turned on the light and looked in. The closet was big, so Kelly walked in and closed the door slightly behind her. A horrible stench filled her nose. It smelled of dead human. Looking around, Kelly saw a horrible sight, a body laid brutally pierced and bloody along the back at a wall, and a red Yankees cap was on it, and it was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, red and white sneakers. Gasping Kelly blinked and saw somewhat near the body hanging on another hanger was a chain necklace bling with a money sign on it. Choking back a scream Kelly quickly backed up into something. Turning around quickly she saw she had bumped into Amy who was standing right behind her.
Looking at her with fairly sad eyes Amy said, “I am sorry you had to see this, you seem like a really nice person. However, you pry too much. I cannot let you go, again I am truly sorry. And I know what you are going to ask and I will tell you this, I murdered Kenny McCarthy and poisoned Derek Mills because they abused innocent little animals. And I will not tolerate that at all”.
“Your mad...killing people just because of some animal, I am sure there are other ways we can sort this out” said Kelly as she backed up into the farthest wall. Shaking her head Amy said, “I am very sorry, either way or another, you have already seen too much, I can’t let you go with that much information”. And with that Amy locked the door behind her.
A week later at school, a new sign had been posted on the doors and bulletins next to the two old ones and it read “Missing: Kelly Clarkson, Age: 15, Last seen: Thursday, Clothes: Blue turtleneck, light pink pants, pink and orange sneakers”.
