
Revisiting the Saber Tooth Wolf, with the mouth open, you can see how grooves had to be made in the lower jaw to allow for the saber fangs to slide easily and without hindrance.

That was exactly my thought as well. Even a dog has groves on the lips/jaw where the upper canines overlap into the gums. I actually tried looking at saber tooth cat skulls for reference, but for some reason all the fossils are just skeletons, with no fur or lips! What the heck is up with that!? But there were quite a few artistic renderings from the skeletons that did have black groves that I used as a guideline for this wolf's lips.
