I'm not sure where it comes from Wire... oddly enough I was having a conversation the other day with a vising in-law from England and he told me that the American accent is considered to be closer to 'how' the British spoke in the 1700's because we moved from there and lacked the changing influence they came under. I don't know how true that might be but it was interesting.
