more and more decay as it goes up a progressively more dead tree, with progressively more alive plants underneath!

There's something terribly soothing and beautiful about this. I quess it has something to do with the fact that people actually start feeling cheerful after thinking of death instead of sorrow(I'll give you source to that if you want) and those plants bring that effect in use.
