I'm interested in teh significance of his every changing face/skull markings. looks like blood, but what is the significance if any?

It's usually blood, sometimes paint. He applies it himself most of the time but sometimes Sid helps. Uhmmm significance is hard to pin down. He never uses anything permanent even tho he easily could. I think it's because he's afraid of permanence. He is always changing his ideology and interests and is terrified of becoming stagnant or stuck somewhere and I think that's why he lets the markings fade or become washed away. That way he can be someone new next time?
