#22 Medo-Persia
"And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth;
and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’" - Daniel 7:5 ESV
The second beast in Daniel's vision was a symbol of the Medo-Persian empire which corresponds with the "silver kingdom" in King Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 2:32). Being raised up in one side refers to the Persians and Medes ruling jointly at first, but later the Persians rose to be the greater power over the Medes. The three ribs in the bear’s mouth represent three nations that formed an alliance against it but was conquered—Egypt, Lydia, and Babylon.
The bear itself most likely represents the empire's lust for blood, cruelty, and the fighting style of the Persians who tends to rely on brute force.
