Neither of these dogs are mine XD. Both are family pets though. Pixie is a 7 month old Maltese Poodle mix who belongs to my sister. And Midknight is an 11.5 year old Miniature Pincher. Person in first image is me though for anyone who's ever wondered what I look like.
Anyway, was just practicing some different stuff with these two as reference. Mainly face structure and fur texture. Idunno, may ask for some pet photos over break to study..

First off, lovely to see ya! Second, the thing I notice with these sketches right off the bat is how well you transferred their expression to the sketch. Animal expression is trickier than anthro/furry expression since it's more subtle, but you still managed a perfect transfer of it to the sketch lines. I really think that's your biggest artistic gift.
Pixie's expression is so cute in the one where you're holding her though - kinda like "Umm... I don't know what we're doing here, but... okay."

Haha thanks. I'm glad you think so :3, it's certainly a fair bit more challenging, but spending more time around the animals in question or similar ones tends to help notice those subtleties.
Pixie has a habit of taking perfect pictures for my sister, then staring with that expression when anyone else does it XD. I have a younger picture of her somewhere where she blatantly looks away from the camera. May have to work on that, she makes fun photos.

I think animals really aren't so different from people when it comes to good pictures; comes down to circumstance. The best pictures I've gotten of animals (or people) are always those taken with little planning, or more candidly. The more you try to pose someone, the more something seems to go wrong. XD With a person, you can at least explain the process and say "smile" (even though that tends to result in horrible fake smiles) but with animals, they're basically going "I... don't know what the crazy monkey is up to now... and I'm not sure why they're pointing that box-thing at me... getting concerned..." So, that tends to be the expression you get. :P Try doing something Pixie loves - playing, giving her a treat, etc, and then just keep the camera handy and snap a picture (no flash). You'll find you get some more honest expressions that way. :)
