Actually, unless it was supposed to be a mixed train to begin with, you wouldn't usually mix freight and passenger cars. That said, mixed trains were really common too...
Have to love old-timey equipment. Truss rods underneath, clerestory roofs above, and if someone didn't take the time to tighten those truss rods every now and then, the middle would sag like an old bookshelf full of dictionaries. :)
