For many people the Vespa defined what a scooter was. Developed in 1946 by Piaggo & Co. S.p.A. it helped provide cheap, economical transportation for Italians who were living in the austere conditions of post-WWII reconstruction. Soon its popularity spread beyond the Italian Borders and soon Vespa's could be found all over Europe and eventually the US. Simple to operate and cheap to run the little scooters became popular with teens and tourists. They were also embraced as objects of Pop Culture by such movements as the UK Mods in the 1960's.
