They're easy until you need some sort of physical attack power. They were pretty hard back in the day. No with the remakes WHM have a bit more offensive power and specific spells to deal damage! :) Red Mage is amazing though, best of all world to a point. also the only soloable class in FFXI for a while >.>
Now, 4 Monks is basically easy mode once the promotion hits.

XI isn't going anywhere, but the expansions are done for it. It's released it's last recently, I'm on shiva myself there, still kind running through. Very old school.
FFXIV is going strong though! I'm a guild officer on Excalibur, and current running through the new expansion content!

I tried a thirty-day free trial of FFXI a couple of years ago. I had a long laundry list of complaints, but it was a very pretty game with that kind of zen appeal that grindy old JRPGs can have. I never really bothered partying up with anyone for any reason, which certainly didn't make it any faster going.
I've been really curious about FFXIV ever since I heard they were trying seriously to salvage that wreck, and it sounds like they've turned it into something pretty respectable. It's also on my "some day if I have money" list.

These guys are very vulnerable to LIT2
I recently replayed with a team of all BlackBelts and purposely ran them up to LV50. By LV45 even the dinosaurs in the great desert were running from me. It took forever to level up. Of course by that time even the purple robed versions of those guys were also running from me. I actually went to the thin bridge in the Fiend of Air's lair and went actively hunting Warmechs.
I do hope you knoe about the powered weapons. I missed it on my first run. Thor's Hammer cast Lit2 and all that.

I had RUNE around to tell me about all the powered weapons and armour and which spells were broken and everything, so once we got some of those in our inventory everything got pretty breezy. I was probably a bit overlevelled, too.
I started a new game with two Rd.Mages and two Thieves, but got sidetracked by moving chaos right around Marsh Cave. I should pick that up again.

Final point so as not to run this into the ground.
Ever run the SHIP into the mouth of s river? The CANOE pops out and you can dock without a PORT. I use it to get to the Castle of Ordeal to get the TAIL. That way you don't have to land the AIRSHIP half way around the continent and fight you way through.
