Endless Realms bestiary - Balaur
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Okay, this guy was a bit of a pain and was one of the more time-consuming monsters I've done so far, but once I started putting in scale detail I wanted to make sure I did a good job! Balaurs in the game are demons, but originate from Romanian folklore as similar to a classic Western dragon and a representation of Evil, so I wanted a design that reflected the creature's draconic heritage.

While I do get kind of the Peter Jackson Balrog feel, I get more of an impression of a draconic fire demon.
On a separate note, I like how you made the flaming whip more substantial than simply "a whip made of pure flame." In game terms, I can imagine it dealing a number of types of damage instead of just primarily Fire, as well as being used in more ways than just to inflict damage.

Thank you :) And yeah, I think the Balrog comparison was sort of unavoidable, with them both being dark, winged, fiery demons wielding whips. And yeah, I didn't want to make it just a fire whip - I was trying to go for sort of across between Ivy (from Soul Caliber)'s sword-whip and a magical whip made from runes.
*nods* I do try to make creatures flexible, as far as game mechanics go. Put little details on a creature which might be used different ways, or ideally make them inspirational and/or versatile, although it can definitely vary from creature to creature. Some are strictly defined by the art director, but most things I get a decent amount of leeway with.
