Another little something doodled up in my spare time at work
It's been one of my dreams for as far back as I can remember, to experience space for myself. To be so removed from the rest of the world. To just float without gravity's relentless reminder of where you are. To leave everything.... everything behind and just be.
I remember one astronaut saying that during his journey back to earth, he saw the earth, the moon, and the sun, and all of the heavens, and it struck him that every molecule in his body, and in his buddy's body, and in the ship around him, and everything he was looking at came from the same place, and he felt completely at one with the universe "It wasn't us and them, it was me...all of it was me" I believe he said. I like that thought.
One day before I die, I will traverse the void. I may even walk on the moon, or hell, even Mars. One day...
Art © me, cuz I'm a Rocket man, Rocket maaaaaannnn burning out his fuse up here alone

I am actually pretty fascinated by the fading hexagons into the abyss of stars above the character; it offers up a rather touching response to the description that you have given here. I will also offer a positive response to the use of lighting reigning down on the character as he circles an eliptical sphere that is just as much a part of him as the rest of the stars.
Good.
Good.
Very amazing, and a goal/sentiment I've always held as well. Space has always fascinated me and I'd jump into a ship given even a sliver of a chance.
And btw, the subtle expressions are always the best, I love the look on your face almost more than the entirety of the picture...but of course the expression wouldn't be as meaningful without the view ^_^

My dear brother, the same heavens that shines over your head is the same you would see from the Alabaster surface of the Moon or the crimson deserts of Mars. The cosmos is not something above and detached from you...it's above and within you, you ARE the universe. You are the very essence of it not only being aware of itself, but seeking a deeper meaning within it's own experience.
The interior of the stars is already within you.

In spaaaace? Because there's no one long seam anywhere to buckle and split, and because it's often cheaper to work with small samples (*cough diamond cough*) than large sheets, and if one is damaged, you only need to replace one standard part (until you get to compound curves).
Alternately, because those are viewscreens, and he's piloting a ship with an armored cockpit with external cameras.
But mostly because it looks cool.
My secret fantasy has always been to soar in the atmosphere of Jupiter, while I watch a supraorbital shell built around it under my direction. (At the level of elevation where it's at 1G, a shell around Jupiter would have like 300x as much surface area as Earth)

Late-ass comment, but here goes.
With a window constructed of triangular pieces, each piece would have only 3 forces pushing upon it to make it structurally sound (pushed from each side). However, the hexagon has six. Nature itself has derived that hexagons are the most structurally sound geometric shapes (honeycombs; hexagons are basically created from squishing circles together until they fit snug against one another. Then, viola! Hexagon.).

ouchie! well in industry as a combination welder fitter and a machinist I can say you both have valid statements, see I'm the guy that has to fix the engineer's mistakes at the job-site even though his paycheck is fifty times what mine is he'll get all the credit. Anyway triangles are more structurally sound, that's why you use a support from a piece of square then cut off one corner to make it into a triangle at the atomic level when the face lattice converts to space lattice structure allowing greater strength.
This does not work with glass since it is a liquid, inside of glass are hexagonal shapes to give it strength look at any grammar-school glass door.
But the last point is though the glass hexagonal effect looks cool in this painting I doubt this would be glass. But if not would the hexagonals be needed, that is one for the engineer to work out, I have to got fix somebody's mistake excuse me.

'Space Oddity' is a song about an astronaut who burns up upon re-entry, 'Ashes to Ashes' is a song that reveals 'Major Tom' was just a druggie who burned out over the years. I think the recurring theme for both songs is 'burning out.'
I was gonna respond with 'Life on Mars' but..that'd be too expected. =P

The solitude, peacefulness, and weightlessness is very appealing when it comes to space. For me it would especially be the weightlessness. I think a lot of people have had some type of fantasy about being able to fly and space offers the closest substitute. I think this pic has givin me the urge to go to space as well.
*Rocks out to "Shiki no Uta"* Associating a song about the seasons with furries in space... Eh, I think it still works :3

Your ambitions seem more realistic than mine.
I just want to leave this earth and live in some other celestial body, away from every little and large problem this earth has; war, disease, economy, everything. Hell, I just want myself to live far longer than the weak life expectancy of 80 so I cal just travel through the stars and immerse myself in the mysteries the stars offer.
*Sigh* Dreams.
But anyways, a gorgeous piece. Nicely done!

excellent work! instant fav.
the thought is wonderfully expressed, almost to the point beyond words.
All the gadgets and gizmos in the world, every little bit of technology that allows us to traverse the universe. When you stare out at the stars, all that ceases to be. it is just the stars, and you.

The folds in the pants, the way the light hits his chest, his eyes, his expression, the "glass" of the window, the details in the tech, the little hints that he's in Zero-G. All these things are wonderful.
The stars though... When I was a kid, my family moved out into the country. And sometimes, especally on a bitingly cold and moonless winter's night, you could go outside and the sky would be just filled with stars. I remember lying on the ground, even on snow, to just stare up at them for as long as I could stand the cold. And it felt like I could allmost reach out and touch... something. Not the stars, but something connecting me and them, like touching the distance itself.
I live in the city now. There's too much light to see the stars like that here. But that's what this reminds me of.

Nice description - I definitely sympathize with you. Space is nice, but the reason I'm not a big fan of it is because it requires so much equipment to actually be in space. A bunker, on the other hand, all you need is a shovel.
Anything else? Oh yeah. Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids, you know.

"Far away, this ship is taking me far away. Far away from the memories of the people who care if I live or die. Starlight, I'll be tasting the starlight, till the end of my lifetime, I dont think I care about it anymore. I'll never let you go, if you promise never to fade away, never fade away." - Starlight by Muse
Cant help but think of that song as I look at this, and for some other odd reason I keep thinking I see nebulas in it too.

I know there's no chance in hell that you're ever going to read this, but I just wanted to say that this is an absolutely beautiful piece.
I, too, have always dreamt of drifting among the stars, or setting foot on another planetoid... Maybe I'll see you out there some day. :)
Good luck, buddy.

I like the line grabbed from Elton John's "Rocket Man" it gets you dreaming. Personally space has always been somewhere I'd love to go, to see the cosmos and traverse the solar system.
Maybe sometime in the future it will be possible? I look ahead, and I hope. Any way, very nice image, it kinda looks like your character has a dreamy eyed expression, although I've never seen him relaxed before. Unique control system for your vessel too, reminds me a bit of the old Dragoons I used to have in my army, their antiquated museum artifacts by now, but they did their jobs well during the Third Installment War.
Any who, I hope sometime your dream comes true as well, though I doubt vessels as advanced as those in Sci-Fi or even public space travel wont happen till the year 2100 given the worlds current greed and economical faults.
I should know, Iceland's going bankrupt, AND I LIVE THERE. Fucking banks...

Fly me to the moon,
Let me sail among the stars,
hmm-hmm-hmm-something-something
Jupiter and Mars.
I fail at remembering good songs, but hey, it's a solid way to remember and associate feelings that aren't quite describable. Stuff I haven't really experienced except for through others.

Heh. Love the Beehive Barrier. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p.....BeehiveBarrier)
I love this. You are far from alone when it comes to having dreams of being an astronaut, of experiencing space, of wanting to let slip the surly bonds of Earth.
We are all starstuff, to quote/paraphrase Dr. Sagan. I have his "Pale Blue Dot" speech taped up at work.
Your art, your talent, is as gobsmacking impressive as ever, thank you so very, very much for sharing something like this with us.
Godspeed.

Quite the dream. I am on the same page as you, the drive of a ship pushing you through the hollows of space. Witnessing events and mass that no other has ever seen, to explore beyond the safety of the known.
And even the familiarity of the moon would be neat to view in such a close manner, not unlike your image.
Fine work, you hit my dream on the head with this submission.
If you sell prints of this piece, you would certainly have a customer.

Once again I'm blown away by your art and the emotion in it. I'm in the same camp, space has always fascinated me and I hope to someday experience that feeling of understanding that comes with it. I know its unrealistic to think that deep-space travel will exist in my lifetime, but I can dream.
Space. It will always have that undying feel to it, the feeling of mystery, adventure, and the longing to be up there, among the stars, witnessing the birth and death of stars, galaxies, and the known universe all together. The longing to ascend above the heavens and be able to view space, everything, in its absolute glory, and realize how small we are, and how far we have to go. It fills me with anticipation for the future and regret that I will never know how far we will go.
Beautiful work, Strype.

Duuude you should've totally drawn the moon yourself! I know you could and while this piece is still gorgeous-- I think had you drawn your own moon into the scene would've capitulated this work completely in bringing everything together. I just imagine you could've done one neat job at it too!
He seems a little disturbed by something, he seems to have the feeling to me, of drawing back, like mild fear or apprehension.
I get that more from his body than his expression, there is a restrained urge to move, unlikely in a cockpit; still that one looks pretty roomy enough to have someone else along for the ride...

Something about this piece makes me smile inside in a way I haven't in a really long time. <3
Fantastic work. :"] You really did a stunning job with this one, especially expressing your idea. Haha, you and I share the same dream. x3 Hope at least you achieve it!
Phenomenal job! <3

Hay Xeno! lol Didn't know you posed here >.> But anywho, I really love this artwork. I love astronomy and just seeing this reminds me of the days when I was a wee little pup. I fantasize about going on a voyage into deep space. Seeing nothing but stars and darkness. It could make anyone feel lonely. It makes me wonder if Voyager 1 had a passenger, what would he be feeling right now at this time with no signs of human life within billions of miles from him.
Slowly, day by day, we get closer to the stars.
One day I'll get there.
A vision-spanning observation dome, slowly opening from sensory-deprived darkness. A point of blue light widening to an arc, a curve, the edge of the world. Impossibly huge and detailed, hanging in front of me, brilliant UV-laden whites and ultimate unmoving blacks, with a faint haze between the two of our thin skin of air. As it fills my vision from edge to edge I'll crumble to my knees and cry, and not know how anyone could do anything but.
One day this will be.

F- yeah. Me too. I would like nothing more than to be a space traveler and explore the heavens for the rest of my life. Hell I would even settle for working on a space station and getting to see the cosmos every day. I want nothing more in my life. To float around in space, detached from everything, seeing the stars for myself, planets, astral bodies, ect.
One day. You and me both.
I'd say it's my biggest dream to travel the stars, and I see I'm not alone.
...or even better. Starship Captain! :U
Anyway, enough of that, this piece is simply stunning! Everything about it is just - UGH. It's beautiful. <3
