Chapter 1: Rude Awakenings
Once upon a time, in a far off lands known as Augarnia. There was a war between humans and dragons. Before the war the dragons were the first born of the old gods, and ruled the world over the lesser races born after. Yet due to the dragon’s own selfish desires soon fought one another and nearly destroyed everything in their path in quest for their craving for more power, wisdom, or even for the food that was grown in plenty. The gods grew angry at their children’s decent into chaos and decided it was time to punish them for their actions. They sealed away the dragon’s power by cursing the richest minerals embedded into the world and set them into a deep slumber. Thus peace was obtained but that cost of silencing their predecessors. They soon created Man a being equal to their wisdom and mixed with all the animals and lesser creatures of the world, along with the ability to adapt, but hindered them to be less attuned to their creators’ god like powers. So they would not be as corrupted as the Dragons. Man soon came to be, while they ruled the lands and lived in harmony with the other lesser beings. However, due to the Man’s still earlier stages of life began to alter the very world their gods have given them to discover what lied beneath or beyond the skies. Until one day, one of the most powerful dragons was awaken, and saw what was happening to Augarnia. The Obsidian Dragon roared calling out to all of his brothers and sisters to wake from their slumber, and to claim back what was their birthright. Man was hunted down like beast, unable to fight back against the Dragon armada where they were secluded into the last capital fortress, Light’s Haven. When 100 of the strongest and most powerful Dragons lead by the Obsidian Dragon, soon approached the capital ready to destroy what was left of Man. A single prince convince Dwarves, Elves, Trolls, Ferals, nearly every race who can hold a weapon to defend. When hope was nearly lost, one of the younger Elder gods came before the prince in a ray of light and granted him the power to protect his people. Thus giving them a chance so they may battle on equal ground. The First War of Augarnia began at the gates , thousands lost their lives, but the price was even greater for the Dragons. The Dragon Armada was defeated when power wielded by the prince slaughered the Obsidian Dragon. The Dragons soon turned on one another fighting over who would lead them all, but soon scattered into a political and powerful turmoil. While the lesser drakes left their elders to claim unwanted landscape for their own. The Lesser Races of Augarnia celebrated and returned back to their home lands and families. The prince soon became known as the King of Light, however the king grew concern about the remaining dragons and began a new order, These heroes from the war began to train under the celestial ways known as the Dragon Slayers.
Years passed as the king’s order went on a crusade to slay every dragon they came upon, as most of the Dragons went into hiding them selves as the lesser races or Man alike. After the King of Light’s death, his heir’s order began to grow suspicious of the Lesser Races working with Dragons, and living amongst them to gain their draconic powers. Those loyal to the Dragons, were known as heretics and called Dragon Knights. By the Command of the First Dragon Slayer General and the Son of the King of Light, took into effect on a invasion of the lands and forced the rule of Man over all. The Gods soon abandoned all hope and were considered at fault by the current generation of Man to be responsible for the taint of Dragon and Magic. Until one day , a old sage from the highest mountain praised that dragons, man, and all other races would finally live in peace in Augarnia. That tale would began as such…
In the distant hills, rode a young man in a green cape riding on a horse. His eyes brown yet reflected in them was chivalry, innocence, and honor. His shield bared the crest of the Dragon Slayers, while he wore a squire’s breastplate, with a short blade on his belt. While he traveled into the village, many stared at him with awe and concern. He spotted that a few of the huts were boarded up or either burned to the ground. His thoughts was in deep joy. “ Finally, my very first mission alone without anyone watching over me. I will finally prove them I can slay my first dragon! I‘ll even bring back a scale to Sir Gerald.” He smiles day dreaming when the horse goes at a full stop, neighing a bit as he falls off over backwards. He catches himself before he hit the ground clinging on to the saddle, with a sigh of relief. “That…was close.” He climbed back up on his horse giving it a stare to behave. He then reaches the largest house in the village, where the fat bearded man in fine attire burst out the door with joy.
It was the Mayor shouting“ Welcome! Welcome! We are so glad you came. We’ve been waiting for your arrival for weeks, but at last we can breathe easy now that you here. Sir Gerald.” The young man blinks in confusion nearly tripping over while climbing down his horse. After he heard his teacher’s name, and tried to pronounce correct the error, while he softly spoke “Sir Gerald? I believe you have me mist-” until the Mayor interrupted him patting his back. The Mayor proudly shouts again “Nonsense, don’t be so modest! Come , Come inside and rest SIR GERALD!” The Mayor then shoving him into the building with servants holding and locking the door behind him. The young man stands there confused thinking what was going in. The servants looked outside the windows giving an all clear sign to the Mayor. The young man speaks softly after clearly his throat, “Ahem, Mister mayor, you are mistaken for I am not Sir Gerald. He is my teacher.” The Mayor walks past him taking a seat at his desk, grunting, “Yes, Yes I know very well about that. I know very well you are not him. Yet I wanted to make sure no one was listening or spying” The young man baffled by what he meant and began to question him. “Spying? But I was told I was the only one requested, not my teacher. Explain yourself why all this falsehood?” The Mayor then speaks “ Look, Sir…what was your name again.” The young man replies. “ Parker, sir and..-” the Mayor then interrupts again.” Listen Parker, I’m desperate right now. My people are believing I hired them a top notch Dragon Slayer, but unfortunately I can’t afford to do so, but Sir Gerald offered to send you instead in his place.” Parker rubs his head with all this deception, feeling uncomfortable. “ Mister Mayor, I’m capable of handling the dragon, but to do so under my Master’s name, that would dishonorable.” The Mayor stands while turns walking to the window.” Relax, I plan on telling them the truth after the job is done, I only need the namesake for starters. I can’t just tell them I hired a just anyone. Besides you handled killing bigger ones before, right? This shouldn‘t be a problem” Parker goes quiet for a bit , looking to the side feeling embarrassed “I actually haven’t killed any dragons by myself before, but..” The Mayor turns with his eyes wide open. “ What!? Sir Gerald sent me a green skin rookie? ”
Parker begins to calmly explain“ Don’t fret mayor, Sir Gerald has taught me everything he knows and I’ve helped him with his quest to slay many a dragon. I assure you that this dragon will not be a problem.” The Mayor begins pacing back and forth rubbing his beard and gut under serve concern will muttering “ That not the only problem, we been having bandit attacks pillaging sneaking into our village.” Parker’s eyes then fill with glee as he heard the word “Bandits?” The Mayor signs rubbing his head “ Yes, bandits and a dragon, they been taking everything we have bit by bit yet no one is willing to help us. The people come to my door at night demanding I do something. I haven‘t sleep in days“ Parker trying to hold the urge to rejoice about having his luck gone for the better to test his skills and boost his feats. His fist pats his breast place with confidence. “ Have no fear Mayor, for I will handle the dragon and the bandits. I‘ll do it for the good of Man!” The Mayor’s eyes gleam with joy as he rushes to face his savior.” Really? Really??” Parker feeling pressured from the Mayor’s approach “ Y..Yes. You can count on me.” The Mayor raises his arms in delight “Oh by the Light, Thank you. Please feel free to gather anything what we have left from the village to aid you, Sir Pecker.” Parker gives him a little annoyed glare “It’s Sir Parker…” The Mayor laughs “ Oh yes, yes sorry about that Sir Parker~” while he walks him out with the servants holding the door. “When you slay the Dragon and handled the bandits we’ll celebrate in your honor the hero of our town!”. Parker in delight being called a hero. ”I’ll have that dragon slain by a couple days!” The Mayor waving him off as he turns back to the office “Good luck on your hunt SIR GERALD!” Shouting out where nearby villagers could hear, and then closing the door on him. “Sigh, brave kid, not too bright, but still brave.”
Parker then turns to face the village when people began staring, soon gossiping about his arrival yet minding their own business. He walked to his horse began to think back; taking on the first steps his teacher taught him. “Alright, now the first thing to do in a hunt is to gather much information on the dragon and bandits.” He started to talk to the shop keepers, the local villagers, and even the drunkards in the inn. He pulls out a feather pen and a notebook writing down the information given to him. Once he finishes with the Intel hunt; he gathers a few rations and gear on his horse and camps outside of the village. The horse tied to the tree as the night sets with moon over head. He sits next to a campfire leaning on his shield reading his notes. “Okay, so according to the villagers. The Dragon is the size of a barn, has red scales on it’s back and golden on it’s stomach, along with two giant wings. It eats the local cattle, and drinks giant barrels of ale? It mostly comes out during the late evenings and vanishes without a trace except for a burn down inn or house along the way. The dragon…also has very sharp pointy teeth, according to the crazy old drunk. “ He marks off that last part and closes his notes pondering “ So it’s a red drake, possible a youngling, with a large wing span for swift escapes or a tiny elder drake with shape shifting magic. Pretty rare for them to do so unless they were taught by an great elder. However tt seems reckless and immature though to be consider an elder.” He pulls out an amulet with a dragon crest on it. “ Even if it’s capable of changing shape. I can track it down with this artifact. Thanks to Sir Gerald for giving me as farewell gift.” He sets it aside in his pouch, while he continues to read the remaining notes. “So the first thing I need to do is handle the dragon. Once I take care of it; I’ll go after the bandits. So they know that I‘m not a pushover” He laughs to himself imaging being praised by the villagers and Sir Gerald even coming to congratulate him on a job well done. Only then to see a giant silhouette of the dragon behind him. When he turns the dragon roars and blows out a thick black smog surrounding Sir Parker. He stands tall shouting “ Not even the legendary Obisidian Dragon will deferat the great Sir Parker! “ and charges at the dragon with his sword drawn and riding on Maribelle. Until he is awaken by foul smell, blinks with drool down his cheek and suddenly coughs his head off by the awful stench. “ Oh by the Light, is that the smell of the foul dragon from afar?” He turns with his eyes watered only to see his loyal stead’s rear had let loose a strong gust right into his face “ Ugh! Mirabelle! Why!?!?” Only later he goes to a pond cleaning himself of the stench and scrubbing down his armor just in case.
The day goes by as he rides on top of Mirabelle to the mountain side, pondering to himself on more notes. Parker speaks out loud while traveling the dirt road. “ According to some the local travelers from the inn. They have seen the dragon fly around this area. There was also an abandon gold mine near the mountain base east side, yet they heard roars coming from the entrance every time they walked by and even a local trader walked in to see. No one has ever came out of the mine alive ever since.” He closes his notes and looks into the distance where the sun shines on the mineshaft entrance. “ That must be where the dragon resides. Besides it’s common for dragons to sleep in secluded large spaces, where else would they keep their stolen hoards hidden to nest. “ Parker puts his notepad aside and stops Mirabelle near the trees off the path. He then gives her a carrot while he ties her up to a tree, petting her softly.” Alright Mary, you stay here and don’t make a sound. Okay?” The horse just looks around and neighs. He grabs his sword and shield approaching to the destination of the gold mine. He peeks over a large boulder to see the sun gleaming at the entrance with mine carts and broken tools lay about. Parker then raises his shield and holds the handle of his sword approaching the entrance quietly. He starts to plan on what to do next. “ Alright, the next thing of Sir Gerald’s teachings was to always have the element of surprise with a dragon, and it’s never best to confront a dragon head on unless you have to. Wise words teacher.” He then peeks inside feeling a cold chill down his spine gazing into the darkness; He then turns away wide eye with his heart in his throat. Parker trying to calm himself a bit. This was his first time facing a dragon alone, and hopefully not his last. “ Okay Parker, you can do this! You just need a light.” He walks over to one the tools and wraps a bandage dosing some fish oil all over. Next he uses his sharpening stone against his sword as it sets the oiled rag ablaze making a bright torch by a spark. He sheath his sword and heads into the mineshaft holding the torch over him. “ Now, onward to the belly of the beast.”
Parker sneaks in the tunnels seeing all the wooden, man-made support pillars holding the roof up barely. His shield raised up high with his eyes peering over the top edge. The torch even higher to light his path with bones and rats scurrying around. He thinks to himself “No wonder this place is abandon, it’s perfect for a dragon.” All of a sudden a giant gush of wind comes flowing through the mineshaft. He shields his face but drops his torch as it lands on the ground. The wind almost sounding like a giant moan or even a dragon’s roar. He peeks over his shield at the direction shaking a bit , when he peeks down to see the torch still light down below. “What….what was that? The wind? No, The Dragon??” shocked from the sudden gust looking down to see his torch still burning. He kneels grabbing hold of the torch and raises it back up in the direction. He gulps in deep thought from the outcome of his journey will be. “Never show your fear, Dragons use that to their advantage, they can smell it. Just like teacher said. I’m hoping that’s not really true though.” He continues turning to see a larger path way to the left one with no support beams, where he smells sulfur and alcohol in the air. He sets the shield down as he touches the walls to see the melted texture of the stone had been charred ages ago. Yet corpses of rats lay burnt with ashes on his glove’s finger tips. He looks concern almost losing his bravado again. “ Yep, this is definitely the place, this tunnel wasn’t made by man. I would hate to see how it was made though” His imagination takes place seeing himself being set blaze by a giant vortex of fire engulfing him, all that’s left was his armor and a pile of ashe. He gulps looking back, “Maybe, I should wait until the beast leaves the tunnel, and set a trap. I…I could even tell them I didn’t see it.“ Parker shakes his head, wipes the ashes off his glove, and grabs his shield only to hear a loud groan filling the tunnel. He stays still, shaking a bit with sweat falling off his cheek gripping his shield. “ I can’t take it, my heart is racing so fast the very thought of this Dragon’s cries even test my mantle of courage.” He glares back in the general direction he was heading “ No I can’t go back! I’m a Dragon Slayer, and I won’t be defeated on my first hunt! I’ll… Hmm?” He spots a small light near the very corner of the tunnel relieving a golden reflection against the wall. “A light?” Parker puts his torch in between a crack in the walls no longer needing it, and draws his sword slowly revealing the pure steel blade sharpened perfectly for battle. He looks down at the handle and gathers his strength to venture forward. His mind was set as his doubts and fears soon turn into courage to his duty. “ Alright Parker, just around that corner is the thing you were raised to fight. The most evilest thing to ever be born in this world, and you’re going to kill it just like Sir Gerald and all the fellow Dragon Slayers before you!” He takes it as slow , quiet like a thief in the night, step by step carefully watching his footing on the smooth glassed floor . He takes one last breathe with his teeth gritting, ready at the edge of the round smooth entrance to the illuminating room. The floor shimmering like gold dust with rays of sunlight shining on the walls outer walls. Parker soon peeked his head a bit just wanting to get a good glance.
The young lad soon saw something he never expected to see. “Wh…what?!” At that moment, he would imagine a laying giant ,fire breathing, bloody red scaled, razor fanged, spear piercing clawed dragon staring into his very soul with it’s giant yellow eyes. But instead, he saw the room filled with melted gold covering the walls of the huge room enough to fit a mansion‘s grand hall. A moderate pile of jewels, coins, and statues set in the middle of the room. The afternoon sun light piercing through a crack on the roof shines down on the very center of the golden hoard. Parker didn’t spot the dragon anywhere in a state of confusion thinking to himself “Where is it? Where is the dragon?? I could have sworn I heard it was in here.” He looked around puzzled to the empty space , knowing the wind came from this direction for there was no where else to go but the hole in the cavern ceiling. “I guess, it was the wind, and the smell of sulfur from the mountain.” Parker soon took the first step into the room holding his sword and shield at the ready for any surprises. His eyes were then drawn to the gold and jewels piled in the center. “By the Light! Look at all that gold!” His voice echoes in the room, when all of a sudden the gold begins to move around on it’s own. Parker jumped back a bit with the shield up and sword aiming to deal the first blow. Parker spoke in a hateful toned whisper “At last, I found you …uhm?“ What emerged from the gold pile was yet a beautiful red long hair woman in violet and green silk garments with tons of jewelry attached on her. The golden coins sliding off her well endowed figure that any man would want in a woman and any woman be envious of. Her ears pointed out like an elf with her deep dazed golden orange eyes look around. She looks at Parker still waking up as he freezes in baffled seeing a fair elfish maiden before him none like he had ever seen such one before. His voice is silenced but his expression is entranced by her beauty “She’s….She’s so…” When her gaze clears and grow wider with a blush on her face. Each of their eyes , only to be broken when she realized a young man in armor holding a sword ready to strike…
