Distributed throughout Europe, the Eurasian Bittern is known by many names such as ‘bog bull’, ‘barrel maker’ and others, due to its distinct booming call. So distinct, they have been referenced in literature, including the Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hound of Baskervilles, used to describe the sound of the hound with that boom.
