I this is over priced I'll eat my hat. :I
When I was working nights at mcdonalds here in the UK I was doing 11 hour shifts at £5.65 ($8.40 USD) per hour after midnight or £5.15($7.66 USD) before midnight. (apparently I was working for this but my paychecks say other wise) I was working 5 days per week, and on my fortnightly paycheck I only got £200 ($297 USD) Where as I should've been payed £653 ($970 USD) every two weeks.
My point being a person has their right to spend their money on whatever they want, so long as they've payed their bills that need to be payed. People deserve treats now and then.
And I'd pay this in a heartbeat for Falvies art, I can tell you now I've spent $125 (Roughly £85) on pokemon cards in one day. I'd rather pay that for Falvies art. :I And with how popular Falvie is, there's all ways going to be some person who doesnt do any calculations.
Sorry Falvie, I usually keep my mouth shut with comments and stuff, but I had to spread my own personal thoughts etc. ;w;
Cant wait to see this finished among the rest of the art you produce in the future. <3

Honestly if it was a different pose, I'd potentially be interested (not that this is a bad pose by any means! It just doesn't suit my charsXD)
That's only like $20 an hour-ish (excluding fees and that shit) and that's still less than half the industry standard. Plus Falvie has just under 40,000 watchers- there's always gonna be someone to buy it XD

Your opinion is of course yours to have! But just because some americans make minimum wage, does not mean Falvie has to. She I assume has worked many years honing her craft, and like anyone working in their craft long enough...there are raises. And raises and pay and cost are all based on demand of your work. Thus, this is more than fair.
It's okay, art is a luxury like I said and my time is worth much more than 20$ as an artist... once you get educated on the numbers of what art should be priced you'd be appalled at what people on this site are making.
Me? I'm not ashamed to charge what I believe my time to be worth, I worked hard to get where I am. I have confidence in my prices as many other artists should as well because underpriced art makes me uneasy. :/

although charging minimum wage before you have a name for yourself should be expected... you need to earn your keep! A lot of what I charge is for the years of work I put into my name. I'm pretty sure an artist is allowed a raise from minimum within 4 years of doing their business and craft. I charged 20$ a full body picture when I started 4 years ago and now I charge 150-300$. Work hard, kids!
I wish I could charge that kinda money. That's what I hate about the fandom.... just a few folks can make a living. The rest have to practically give it away to get traffic.
Are you wrong? Not at all. It's how it -should- be.
I've been doing furry art since 2001, I was drawing long before that. I'm lucky if I can make $5 an hour. That's just messed up. The fandom is awful with their perceived value of art. There are a handful buyers that pay honest prices, but a whole lot of folks just want cheap.
It kills a persons motivation, to feel so undervalued. I know I am hardly drawing anymore... It feels pointless. Time better spent doing 'productive' things.
Good for you for all you said and for having your place in this fandom.

Eh lets face it, the world in general is crazy with their perceived value of art, just check this out:
https://youtu.be/4BlLX03OJRU
That aside, dont give up. Just because you cant make money from your art doesnt mean you arent being productive (or that your art doesnt have potential value)! Ive gone through the same thing multiple times (a couple of times it put me in a pretty bad funk) and if you give up on art youre missing out on time and opportunities to make your work better and more appealing to people.
It can be really rough, but if you keep at it, youll get there eventually. Art is super subjective and the best you can do is just keep on making it!

I'm a mom of 3. Time for art is limited. Most of what I do draw is personal art, but I can only draw my own characters so much.. I get bored. I can barely give it away. Seriously, I have posted free art offers before without anyone interested.
I'm just old and irrelevant now *laugh* Even the small artists had a shot if they worked hard 10 years ago. I remember doing trades with 'the big names' back in the day. Now the market is saturated, we're all undercutting eachother just to get noticed.. once you have a waiting list you can raise your prices and join the ranks of the decently paid folk. Just a whoooole lotta people that will never get noticed. Just being 'good' isn't enough anymore.
Ofcourse, none of this changes a thing. Falvie has made it, found her market and style. I think it's awesome. Sure I am envious, a lot of us are. Folks that complain about the prices don't get how much work it takes to get to where Falvie is.
A fast-food manager makes $10 to $14 USD an hour, that's a job you can get with a GED (trust me, I've been a fast-food manager). As a self-employed artist you have to pay your own taxes, SSI, insurance (including the portion an employer would normally cover), supplies (tablet, art programs, a computer, rent for the space you work in even if it's just an extra bedroom) on top of the fact it takes a lot of time to become a good artist.
Buuut, I'm done cluttering up this thread. All these arguments have been heard before

Unfortunately it often comes down to style. There seems to be certain styles that people are drawn to more than others, and therefore those who draw in that style are able to charge more for their work because there is a higher demand.
Try not to get discouraged though! Do more personal art! Try other styles! Keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and maybe you'll find a niche for yourself. :)

Agreed.
It drives me nuts because my style is not a popular one at all.. but that's -my- problem
I've been playing with it, but then I get frustrated because it's silly to try and be something I'm not. I -do- study the popular artists trying to figure out what they have in common and why it appeals to the crowd. But, in the end, I'm me
I've had my shot, I had my butt firmly nestled in a niche when I started... but as my name gives away, I am chaotic. I'm all over the place. That's one thing I've learned from the top artists: they have one style.. one general theme.. one look. They're a brand, so to speak. I'm not, far from.. I'm all over the place. It used to be a good thing to be versatile, but not anymore. So many people offering their art, you have to impress at first glance.
Falvie has that mastered She's a brand.
Anyway, done cluttering up this thread.

Style and quality*. I have seen a lot of people demand that they should be paid more while their work is the quality that I could produce when I was 16. You have to be realistic and honest with yourself, and know where you stand when compared to other artists. Style definitely plays a role, but if an artist is just not very technically skilled yet, no amount of style is going to help them.
Oh yes, I totally agree. Quality, above anything else really, will determine the value an artist can put on their work.
I meant that more along the lines of "take two artists of equal quality" where one has a popular style and the other has a style that people aren't really drawn to. They may put in the same amount of work/effort and achieve similar quality, but the demand for one is going to be higher than the other just based on what is popular.
The other thing is while someone may be drawing for 10 years, if they're just drawing the same things over and over without looking up references, tutorials, lessons, etc, their artwork won't see any drastic improvements. They probably still won't be able to find that THING that really pushes their art over the top to create dynamic, interesting pieces. There are reasons people do things like master studies, figure studies, lighting studies, landscape studies, etc. They enhance your overall ability to produce beautiful art even if your intention is to apply it to a furry context.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but experience and skill in art are not always equal. That is to say, you may have been drawing since 2001, but the quality of your artwork is not equal to that of Falvie. People pay for quality, as well as style, so if you hit just the right niche for yourself it's entirely possible to earn a very good wage. Keep working on your improvement and you'll get there.
I have actually found the furry fandom to be extremely generous. I have never been underpaid here. Know what you're worth and don't go any lower.

I'm not claiming to be anywhere near Falvie in talent or anything.
My motivation for improvement hit rock bottom when I came to a point that I was literally better off flipping burgers. My older work is better quality, my newer work has slight improvements in things like anatomy and some techniques. All a personal problem. I'm simply not in a place in life anymore that I have the freedom to invest myself into significant improvements. That ship has sailed, atleast for now.
Definitely didn't mean for this thread to drag on like it has. Coming to the point is not one of my strong suits.
Short version: Yay for Falvie, I'm jelly. If only I had tried harder at a younger age.

Don't say that - artistic improvement is not a race to the finish and it's also not tied to age. You can always still work on getting better. It doesn't have to be significant, but even if you can invest one or two hours every week, that's still going to make a pretty significant difference after a year's time. Of course, I don't know what your schedule looks like, but I can't imagine that you do not have one or two hours of spare time every week.
Not saying that's what you should do, but if you are genuinely looking to improve your skill set still, there is always a way. If you're not sure what to work on or where to get started I'd be happy to help with that, just send me a PM :).

I still try. Just.. not as much. I still see improvement.
Back when I was a really terrible artist I would draw 12 hours a day (I drew really lanky things, women with waists the size of one leg. Super over saturated colors that clashed terribly. Routinely hid hands/feet.) I improved very fast, easily. Then you graduate to the 'big kid' school of art and woah, there's all this technical stuff you never even knew was a thing.
I'm a mom of 3, one is special needs.. I really did not mean to draw all this attention to myself *hides under rock* Been having a rough spot this week... stressed, down, feeling like it's all no use. I'm ok, I'm better. No pity party here.
It's hard to sometimes to move forward, keep at it and not stop and look at others going 'Wow, these folks have it made, just think how wonderful it would be if I could actually support us through art.' And you want to so bad, but not being able to prioritize what to work on, because there's just SO much you see wrong, it overwhelms. Working with old equipment.. outdated programs and feel like you can't keep up. Feel like it all doesn't matter anyway, because you'll never be successful enough. Personal hurdles to cross, pretty much. Going from 'I can do this' to 'Why bother' and 'It's no use'.
You actually made me cry, being so kind. So thank you.
I keep moving forward, slowly. Quietly. Because normally I don't embarrass the heck out of myself posting on threads *laugh*
I usually don't bother commenting on this topic any more, because its tiresome for me these days.
But since when was US minimum wage the standard for the world? And minimum for what? Are we talking answering phones, being an business executive, cleaning toilets or working in the art industry? My point is, we are all different and earn differently depending on location and circumstance. Not to mention, as you say its minimum. Supply vs demand.
As its already been stated, this sort of art is a luxury. If people will pay for it (which they had already done so before you even commented)...then I would say its a decent price worth paying for this bust, as someone bought it!
As you said, I apologise if I come across as rude but I am pretty passionate about this particular complaint :)

Also, just wanna chip in with my support of this!
Let's also just step back and realize that Falvie has 40,000 watchers. That's more than some ADMINS of this site. Clearly she's honed her craft to the point where she can charge at least this much- and she's still not even the most expensive out there :D
Had to chip in with that <3

To all those people out there who like to say art is 'overpriced'. Listen up!
1) $125 is a very good price for something like this
2) Yes. Art is very much a luxury
3) That's your personal opinion based on your monetary situation, not a fact, and not something an artist can really take into account.
4) This is what the artist feels their work is worth. If you don't like the price stated, simply don't comment.

Artists are a strange bunch that's for sure, but I work for my customers and like to think I'm malleable with my work, as much as I can being a PG13 artist :)
Thanks a lot! You're a life saver, if you dont want to keep it private the comment is open (as far as i know before i post this comment LOL)

I saw this almost right after you posted it, I almost got it...I wanted to so bad. I WILL get a piece from you someday! No matter how much you charge! Your prices are totally justified and all dem losers complaining can go fall off a cliff. I can't believe the amount of disrespect in the art world nowadays. It's people like that that are forcing me to stay home, unemployed, because I refuse to take unpaid internships and make people art for free. My work is worth a wage and I have a degree, I am NOT working for anyone for peanuts or for free. And neither should you.
