Haha, wow... this is really good stuff. You get very few people who do the realistic style, these days, without just churning out the same character recolored. You're very good at this... though, speaking as a fan, I'm not sure which I enjoy more. Your original "smoother" style, or this one... I guess I'll just have to wait and see what else you do!

I'm definitely going to keep both, but I always wanted to try and figure out this fur texturing thing, especially for when I color.

cute and fluffy in the right areas. well-muscled, too. all in all, a nice view.
I wonder how the crosshatched area on his nose and cheeks would have looked like with the streaks going along the fur direction? whatever, looks good enough that way.

When I've done it before it's looked messy, but I would like to figure out how to do the texture in those places too.

I don't know if you have already looked it up, but a wolf's head fur can give you a good idea where which fur grows towards. and it doesn't need to be 100% accurate, btw. I recommend darker fir colours like dark grey or black, which shows the hairs pretty well, or a red dog if you can find one who holds still. :)
