So, those of you who tuned into my most recent stream will be aware that my absolute favorite Spyro game was in fact not from the original Playstation trilogy, but rather The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. This is partially because of the gameplay style and challenge level, which blows every other Spyro game out of the water. But it also features Dark Spyro.
***SPOILER WARNING!!!***
I always thought this was such an amazing turning point in the series. I feel like the dark energy entering and corrupting Spyro was such a shocking and deeply pivotal moment from a storytelling standpoint. The idea that Spyro had - by accident - be turned into the very monsters he'd been fighting against, the most dangerous dragon in the world. It was insane. It was such a unique twist on a character, similar to Dark Jak, but even more intense since this happened at the absolute climax of the story.
Even better is the fact that you're able to unlock a playable version... INSANE. Absolutely INSANE. In a way, you could almost picture it as him living with his dark half.
I think Dawn of the Dragon fumbled in a lot of ways, but not having Dark Spyro playable was the biggest one. Even SKYLANDERS got that one right, and they practically killed Spyro's design. Dark Spyro appears for all of 30 seconds and that's just dumb. But, anyway...
***END OF SPOILER***
So yeah. I wanted to try drawing something unique. I hope I did it well!

Nice pic! I've always been a fan of Dark Spyro. ^_^
There was no reason for Dark Spyro to be playable in DotD because they allowed you to unlock Convexity breath (Dark Spyro's "breath") through the upgrade. Of course, that doesn't mean I wouldn't have enjoyed seeing him playable. Unfortunately, even if Spyro's Kingdom had been made, I doubt we would have seen Dark Spyro in the series again, since Spyro was supposed to be a mentor and not actually playable in that.
Skylanders, also, dropped the ball with Dark Spyro. Dark Spyro is supposed to be Spyro's stronger, but highly vulnerable self, basically to the point that which side he's on is influenced by how much dark magic his scales absorb. In Swap Force, they introduce other "dark" Skylanders that were trained by Spyro to control themselves just like Eon trained him. I feel they dropped the ball because Spyro was supposed to be unique. His scales absorbed the dark magic from The Darkness and nearly broke his mind completely. Then, we suddenly have other Dark Skylanders who became "dark" from absorbing evil energy of the volcano. That didn't make sense in my mind, since Spyro is special because his purple scales absorb the magic from around him. If they were simply "evil", I wouldn't have minded, but it's the fact they put them on the same page as Dark Spyro annoyed me.

cynder was always my favorite charicter in the new spyro games...for a number of reasons not related to game play *drool* that said ive always loved spyro, and always will...sierra did good with there retelling of the story i think, largely in that there games actualy 'have' a story the orgianl spyro games had the 'okay heres how the game works ande we will just kinda throw the rest in as we go' sorta feel, they were good games, but thats all they were, games, not much story to them
*shrugs* I do admit from a gameplay storytelling standpoint it is good but you already mentioned another game that had a similar concept so it's certainly not unique per say. (ironically the series creators of the other game you mentioned originally worked on the first spyro trilogy)
