Xodiac couldn't remember a busier day, not since she'd been laid off as a messenger. She'd made soup and sandwiches for lunch and, later, a simple but tasty casserole for dinner, taking only a small portion of each for herself. By evening, every room had gotten her ministrations, and the house was much the better for it.
Along the way, her dress had undergone one more metamorphosis. Every inch of her body below the neck was encased in frills and lace, accented here and there by pink ribbons and bows. Even her hair, which had been a dirty blonde, had paled to a lighter shade, and now rested behind her head in two matching pigtails, and the ribbon on her tail had bloomed into a large bow, with a small bell attached that tinkled merrily with each swing and sway.
As gratifying as the day's cleaning binge had been, though, Xodiac was glad it was over. Some things remained undone, like a good hard scrubbing of the sinks and tubs, and they grated on her like claws on a chalkboard. But there was only so much one woman could do in a day, and she was positively exhausted. She was very much looking forward to taking the dress off, reverting to her normal self, and going to bed.
Best of all, four months of rent had just been paid off, all in one day.
She just hoped Tomae would bring it up soon. Broaching the idea herself came a little too close to refusing to work for her to be comfortable with the idea.
So it was with some relief that she saw him enter the kitchen, where she was busy scrubbing out the oven. Naturally, she straightened immediately and bobbed a polite curtsy, tail jingling — as she had all afternoon, ever since her dress had changed the last time. "Good evening, Master Tomae," she said, adding a respectful nod of the head. It seemed much more proper to call him that than merely sir.
"I'm going to bed now, Xoie," he said. "You really should too."
Xoie? "Yes, Master Tomae. Thank you. But... my name..." She tried to tell him her name, but her protest died stillborn. It seemed too trivial a matter to contradict Master Tomae over. If he wanted to call her Xoie, that was... well, not fine, perhaps, but she could live with it.
"Yes, I was thinking about it. Xoie suits you so much better while you look like that, don't you think?" Master Tomae smiled charmingly. "A pretty name for a pretty woman?"
"I... yes, Master Tomae." It kind of made sense, put like that.
"Good. So while you look like that, I'd like you to answer to that name."
"Yes, Master Tomae." She curtsied again. "Thank you for the pretty new name." Xoie wouldn't have to put up with it much longer, thankfully.
"You're welcome. Now, you certainly can't go to bed wearing all that..." He glanced at the clock on the oven, then reached up and gently removed the frilly hair band that arched over Xoie's head from ear to ear, and handed it to her. "There you go. You may now go to your room and dress for bed."
"Yes, Master Tomae. Thank you." Xoie curtsied again and retreated to her bedroom.
"But wake up nice and early," he called after her. "Say, six o'clock. Do your morning business quickly and be wearing your uniform no later than seven. All of it, of course."
Another curtsy. "Yes, Master Tomae."
In her room, she quickly untied the ribbons and began peeling the outfit off. It baffled her how she could possibly have just dropped her clothes off before, or thrown them in a corner. So messy! She was careful to put everything neatly in its place. Pink things, and the bell, went in a tidy pile on the dresser, with the gloves folded neatly beside them. Shoes in the closet, placed meticulously parallel, with the stockings in rolled delicately into a ball and placed in the toes for storage. The dress itself, along with the underwear, was all methodically hung up or folded and placed in the appropriate dresser drawer. At last she stood naked, ready for bed.
"But... why am I still a girl?" Xoie said softly, looking into the mirror, eyes wide. The reflection was unquestionably that of a female dragote.
"Because you didn't take off the entire costume, of course," came Master Tomae's voice from through the thin door.
"But, Master Tomae, I did!" Xoie insisted. I'm standing here, and.. er..." Telling him she was naked suddenly seemed like a bad idea. Not because he might take advantage, but because it simply wasn't done.
"Nope! I took off your hair band, remember? The wearer of the dress has to take everything off to turn back. Everything."
Xoie's stomach sank. "You mean... I am stuck like this?"
"Only for, oh, thirteen hours or so. That's how long you wore it today, give or take a little," Master Tomae said.
"But, Master Tomae," Xoie protested weakly, "You ordered me to wake up at six. And wear the dress by seven! That is only," she looked at her alarm clock, "eight hours away."
"Yup!" Master Tomae's usual cheer suddenly sounded somehow malicious. "I've been thinking about it, and I decided one day's cleaning isn't nearly enough to pay me back four month's rent, no matter how hard you worked."
She gulped. "How long...?"
"Oh, probably not too long, Xoie. But a little while, I'm sure." She heard the rustle of a plastic bag outside her door. "Which is why I bought you a bathrobe and nightie when I went out to get that stepstool. They're waiting for you here; you can get them after I leave."
"Thank you, Master Tomae," she said, and hated herself for it. But a proper maid thanks her benefactors. Besides, a nightie felt more appropriate to her right now than sleeping naked.
"You're welcome, Xoie. Besides, you must admit you're much more useful like this, not to mention nicer to look at. I didn't realize just how pretty you'd turn out! I think next weekend I'll take you shopping for a few other things, like makeup and toiletries. And maybe stop by the DMV, get you a new license..."
Xoie felt panic rising in her. This didn't sound at all to her like "a little while." A new wardrobe, new identity... who knows how long this might last? Actually, it was sounding dangerously close to permanent! She wanted to scream. He can't do this to her!
"Thank you, Master Tomae," Xoie said instead, and bobbed her head gratefully, even though he couldn't see it and she didn't feel it.
It was only proper, after all.

And it's done! When I saw the progression of the maid costume by CobaltK, I knew somone would have to find a way to get Xodiac into the thing. I hope you liked it.

At least he's respecting her privacy if nothing else.
While a contract under outside influence would never stand up in court, (it would be worth as much as the paper it was printed on), it might be interesting if she eventually signs a 'live-in maid' employment contract (and does it while she's currently outside the maid uniform but still a girl and so the effects aren't gone).

This is going to be a reply to all your comments, since it's kind of messy to respond to them all individually. Even if it does raise my comment count. :)
The costume description says it has five levels. Isn't there a level 5?
Yes, the costume :usericoncobaltk: designed does have 5 levels, and the costume here only goes to level 4. I thought level 5 was just a bit too frilly and overdone, and the mental changes too large. At level 5, there's hardly any of the original mind left, whereas at level 4 there's enough, in my view, to know what's going on and actually come to the surface every now and then, yet remain mostly overwhelmed but the subservient maid persona. I may not even have gone as far as level 4 if it was possible to get stuck at level 3, but the mental changes there were not quite enough to make it so the wearer couldn't remove the outfit on their own initiaitive.

If this was the real world, you're right. Any contract she signed would surely be invalidated if it could be proved that she was wearing this costume at the time, especially at level 3 and beyond. And as the other commenters said, Tomae would probably wind up in jail for assault or illegal use of a magic item or something, for keeping Xoie under its influence much, much longer than Xodiac had agreed to. But it's just a story, a kinky little fantasy. Reaslism is good... to a point. I decided not to address that aspect at all.
I DID notice however that she didn't even think about how she's mentally referring to herself as 'she.'
Glad you noticed! It's a little touch I like to add that helps indicate a person's mental state. And of course she doesn't notice. At that point, it feels natural!
I wonder what happens when this has gone on for at least a month and she goes through her first period.
Inwardly, disgusted and perhaps beginning to despair as she realizes just how long she's been Tomae's little maid. Outwardly, she'll deal with it calmly, effeciently, and privately. This is not something a maid needs to discuss with her master.
How much for a commission that's basically a continuation of this story?
I charge 1.5 cents per word, with a mandatory downpayment of $30.00. Thus, if the story you have in mind is 2,000 words or less, it'll cost $30. If it's longer, then it'll cost 1.5 cents per word. For the sake of reference, Only Proper as a whole is 3,747 words, according to Word, so it would have cost someone $56.21 if it had been commissioned and not a personal work.
If you're still interested, send me a Note on FA and we'll talk about what you might have in mind for Xoie.

Don't worry, you didn't. Sorry for sounding so short with you there. It's just been an unusually busy day, and I was still being distracted by things from all over when I noticed your message. I simply shot that off and then got back to the other things calling for my attention, and didn't pay proper attention to the tone.
To be fair, her mindset for most of the day is that she's doing this voluntarily to pay off a debt. Okay, it's involving more work than she thought, but it's no surprise that he's taking advantage of the deal to get the house as clean as he can make it. Refusing him then would negate the whole arrangement, and then Xodiac's out on his ass. And as for the physical changes... well, ha ha, good one, Tomae. Got him good there. Right?
Now, at the end, as Xoie talks to him through the door... that's another matter.

This story is awesome. Like the costume, her mental changes are so slow and subtle that she's constantly one step behind the magic that's weaving around her. Your writing captures the exact ideas and feelings that were going through my mind as I developed the costume.
Of course, I feel bad for Xodiac in all of this, but until/unless a sequel is written I'm content to make up my own happy ending, where he is eventually let go and finds a way to get some revenge on Tomae.
