Anything to do with squid makes me think of Monstrum, a book I have by Tony 'Doc' Shiels, by turns a vaudeville performer, magician, artist, occultist and cryptozoologist. In the book (which is mostly to do with the ongoing quest to find the Loch Ness Monster) he speculates that Nessie may in fact be a previously unknown species of squid living in the loch, with the famous head shots being a tentacle lifted above the water

I'd recommend the book to you, but it's almost impossible to get a copy today
