Wow, that's a lot of drool. Well, this is my first attempt at making drool and I actually like it. Perhaps a bit too much (or not enough ). I looked at a tutorial to help with it. Of course I ended up deviate from it. But it did get me started on the right road.
I see lots of potential here. Should I add even more slobber? Cut it back? Or just right?

I used
evilartnazi tutorial here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/524871/ as a start. The main difference is that I went crazy with the smear brush for the middle layer. Then I turned down the opacity to give it that clear look.
I love the smear tool and used it almost everywhere. It's almost like using a watercolor brush as I use it to 'shove' the colors into certain areas. I'm using GIMP now and one of it's limitation is that it doesn't have a resize option for the smear tool (at least I couldn't find it). That scale slider missing even though other brush tools have it. Very odd and a pain.
Asside from that and the often time wacky interface, I'm warming up to GIMP. I already like it better than PhotoShop. PaintShop Pro still has the best interface IMHO.
Anyway, if you really want to know how I got this effect, I guess I could post the separate layers in my scraps or something.

I made a quick tutorial here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1615459/ . I hope it'll help. But if thing the actually layers I have would help better, I can convert them to PS format and send it to you.
I had the tendency of using dodge and burn a lot. Kinda weened myself from it and find using multiply layer setting better for the shadows and divide for the highlights. Sometimes I use lighten only to add that special glints at the end.

That's what I was going for. And yes, I dabbled with it some more. It's getting downright scary. Subtle but looking much crisper now. Plus I fixed a couple of mistakes.
I can spend more time on it but I feel I must move on to the background soon. I'm drawing a blank here (well, something better than a blank). I really don't want to go with my old standby of just making clouds. I want to do something difference but not too difficult, or I'll be working on it months like that one elaborate background I did.
