I was out at a park with tigertoy for the first time in a while last week and found this wonderful fungus right next to the trail. And, having a real camera with me for once, of course I had to photograph it.
I am not super familiar with the jelly fungi, but it appears to be Auricularia auricula-judae, also known as wood ear (hence the punny title) or Jew's ear (hence the species name). It is one of the most widely-eaten fungi in the world. If you have had miso, you have probably eaten this! It is cut into strips and put in the soup, and has kind of a rubbery texture.
Wood ear makes it sound kind of tough but it is actually quite squishy. <:
