I also saw in a comment on the owner's page that the ear shot woulda been painful.
SEEING AS I KNOW A LOT ABOUT PAINTBALL (no, I don't) I figured it was more of a smear from something else and the paint tacked on.

The closest thing I've been pelted with is bottle rockets. I died. If it was my ear, I'd prob not have one. xD
