Reminds me of another Gilbert Shelton comic where Fat Freddy's Cat is talking to a German Shepherd, who is waxing rhapsodic about how he gets along great with his master. When the master calls, the doggie snaps into a perfect Heil Hitler pose and goosesteps off...
there was a detective cat called 8-bal, in a science fiction story, i forget who wrote it, i believe the story was called send best regards, it was the second in a series featuring dog named boregard, however that's spelled. probably berry longyear, but possibly not.
there's also of course a mystery writer who's name i forget, who's stories are mostly all named the cat who ... did something or other, like the cat who walked through walls, which took place and an s.c.a. revel or a live, something like that. and they actually did have cats in them, but just ordinary cats who happened to lead humans to stumble on clues.

yup, that's the mystery writer one. i stumbled upon them some time in the 80s. didn't know she started them in the mid 60s.
not sure who wrote about 8-ball and boregard though, read those in analog, some time in the 90s.
at least five years before longyear's stories of the a.b.c.d. so it could have been anyone.

it appears hienline must have read braun, and i only remembered that particular name because of its unusualness. at any rate, i know i've read several of braun's anyway. i didn't see mention of one that had a setting that was like an s.c.a. revel or a ren faire, but i'm sure i read one that was.
the guy i was mundanely named after, died in north africa, in world war two, finding a land mine the hard way. and i've had very little contact with relatives, never met any on my father's side. never got into the alky or other substances though, nor writing nor acting. nor of course had any fortunes dumped in my lap.
would have built a combination commune, nature reserve and place for ride on gauge trains if had.
i do seem to be a cat magnet, and the apple barn appeals to me though.
