This is a Blindside short story written by

She said she wasn't in the mood, but of course, she never was at first. He always had to get her to loosen up before she felt like playing. It always went like that. He'd annoy her until she had to pay attention to him, and before she knew it, he would have her laughing and smiling the way she was meant to. She would then thank him. Either right then or in the morning if things went further, and while that was often nice, all he truly wanted was to see her happy.
She deserves to be happy, he thought.
His eyes caught the glint of her eye-patch, and an idea flashed through his mind. He drifted behind her and nosed her shoulder playfully.
Nyxis sighed, "I have a headache, Samson." She faced him. "We can do this lat-"
"Keep away!" He howled and lunged at her face, latching his maw around the edge of her patch. There was more resistance than he figured there would be, but it did loosen. He would remember the suckling pop the patch made when it detached, but only in hindsight and in quite a few nightmares.
Samson giggled; eyes closed and tail wagging as he darted back. He held his paws up playfully.
Chase me! Come on, chase m-
He opened his eyes. Samson froze. He had known there would probably be nasty wound or scar, perhaps a milky eye, but this was...
"Oh god," he said through the patch in his muzzle.
Nyxis stood completely still. Shock was the only emotion plastered on her face, at least on the parts that weren't missing. There was nothing where her eye had been. Only stark white bone that formed a hole that led into his friend's face. Blood leaked down from freshly torn skin, and something flowed from that hole. It was clear, but far too viscous to be water. The fluid trailed from the hole, and Samson's eyes followed its trail to the tip of his nose. He fell against the wall hard enough to send his glasses falling from his head when he saw the trail end at the patch still held in his mouth.
I can taste it. Oh God, I can taste it!, his horrified mind realized.
He slid down the wall instinctively, wrapping his tail around himself and hugging it tight. He felt the tears well in his eyes before releasing into two streams. "I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry."
Nyxis finally stirred. She threw an arm over the right side of her face, blocking her wound from Samson's view. She looked calm, but Samson could smell her bottled-up panic and that scared him more than anything. She held out a wing. "Samson, my eyepatch."
He flinched away from her, trying to curl into an even tighter ball. "I'm sorry," he repeated. "I- I didn't mean..."
"It's okay. It's okay," she said, "I’m not mad. Just give it back and- AH!" Nyxis's face twisted in pain, and she pulled her wing away from her face baring all of it to Samson. He felt his heart and stomach twist.
"OH MY GOD!" Samson yelped, and the patch fell from his mouth. Nyxis snatched it from the air, but that was the last Samson saw as he scrambled to his feet and took off down the hall. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" He shouted as he ran. He felt his heart ache with every step.

Nyxis, the side of her face feeling like it was on fire, watched as the labra-collie rounded a corner and his sobs faded into nothing. She turned to her patch lying in her palm. A few strands of skin and fur hung from its edge along with her own fluids. She turned the patch over and caught a glimpse of her face in its reflection. Her blood went cold.
No one deserved to see that.
Nyxis shed only one tear that night, and it had nothing to do with her pain.
"No, I'm sorry."

Yeah, Journey did a wonderful job! ^___^ I just sat there reading "...the suckling pop the patch made when it detached" over and over the first time like, "THAT IS HOW IT WOULD GO, EEeeeeeww"
And although the initial taking off the eyepatch is a dull pain, it's not unbearable, and she's gotten used to it and would probably need to do it from time to time for cleaning. She could theoretically set it aside and get a more normal-looking patch made, but it would do nothing for the drainage, and she has no idea if leaving a piece of crystal that formed from her aside for a long time, even in her room, is a good idea!

I'll admit I was very proud of myself with that line of description. I got into a conversation on writing today and brought this line up. Someone asked me how I knew what a "suckling pop" sounded like. I told them to pull the leg off of a freshly cooked turkey next Thanksgiving. That's the sound it makes. It's a sound you don't forget.
Out of curiosity how did you think it was going to go?
And yes a little romantic was what I was going for. This is my view, I'm not sure what Defiance's is, but I think Samson is just a little too slow to figure out that he's in love with her. Or perhaps on some deep level he knows, but also knows he can't be with her. It's sort of like puppy love from the point-of-view of the puppy.

I thought that removing the patch would result in Nyxis going berserk, and inadvertently harming (or maybe even killing) Samson in her rage.
And yeah, you did a very nice job of portraying Samson's personality as 'clueless, but with good intentions'. I'd love to see more from you.

Nah, surprise taking her eyepatch is like stripping a band-aid off a still-open wound. Of course she's going to be understandably a *little* "wow, what was that for?" upset!
Yeah, Samson is too simple minded to think about the details of their relationship So the most he'd contemplate about it at any given moment is, "she likes me, yay!" or "I ate her food cause it smelled yummy Why is she yelling at me?" XD

Nyxis usually doesn't make a big deal of it but was worried Samson would freak out, because him rampaging in terror all over the castle would be pretty bad(he's pretty big!) Nyxis's nervousness and the shock of the injury's appearance of course only freaked out Samson more. :)
