Superpower(s) and Associated Caveats
- Has an innate ability to create up to two portals at one time, one violet and one white. They are connected and traversable when active at the same time.
- Has to types of portals at his disposal: Spatial and Dimensional. A spatial portal cannot be placed or paired with a dimensional portal, and vice versa.
- Spatial portals, when both halves are active, look like a ring of colored light surrounding an opening to wherever the other portal is placed. These portals conserve the momentum of any object that travels through them, and are used to allow travel between two separate points in space.
- Dimensional portals, when both halves are active, look like a small mass of tar or colored ink that shifts and oozes in a subtle manner only apparent if watched closely. These portals do not conserve the momentum of objects that pass through, instead acting like tar and being difficult to move through in either direction without the application of force. These portals are used to travel between alternate universes/dimensions.
- Both types of portals will look like a glowing spot on the surface it is on, with small black splotches if active without its counterpart, smooth to the touch and smelling faintly of ink.
- Both types of portals must be placed on a solid and relatively flat surface, and have enough room to cover a minimum surface area of roughly 4 square centimeters while in the shape of either a circle or an ellipse.
- He must have visual knowledge of where he is placing a spatial portal before he can place one, though he does not need a line of sight. Dimensional portals are not restricted in this manner, but are more dangerous to use when placed randomly.
- Ashley can alter the size of active portals as long as there is enough surface area to accommodate the changes. He can also alter the shape to a degree, so long as the portal remains either a circle or an ellipse.
- The maximum surface area a portal may cover is roughly 10 square meters.
- Ashley can move a portal along a flat surface without deactivating it. To move the portal to a separate flat surface, however, the portal must be deactivated.
- While activating and deactivating both kinds of portals takes as little effort as a thought on Ashley’s part, his stamina will steadily drain from him should anything stay fixed in place between a pair. The effect is negligible for spatial portals unless something remains in between them for an extended period of time. The effect for dimensional portals however is much more prevalent, and coupled with its tarlike properties he can become easily drained when using them to the point that he can pass out.
- A portal will resist being closed if an object is still passing through at the time. The portal can be forced to close if Ashley focuses hard enough, but doing so will bisect the object instantly and take a chunk of his stamina based on what and how much was cut into.
- If a person other than himself passes through one of his dimensional portals, he can sense the general direction of the other outsider at all times, even if he goes to another dimension without them. This sense gets stronger the closer he gets to the person in question.
- Through his dimensional travels, Ashley at one point discovered a reality where the residents had artificially engineered eternal life and eternal youth, which Ashley obtained as well, thus granting him seeming immortality.
- His eternal life is accomplished through a healing factor that restores his body over time.
- The healing process is slow, so he will still appear to be dead if struck with a killing blow, with the amount of time until he is patched up depending on the severity of the wound. For reference, it takes about an hour for him to heal from a beheading.
- Supposedly, his healing factor does not actually grant him eternal life; the complete and total destruction of his body on a cellular level would theoretically destroy his healing factor as well, thus killing him. For obvious reasons, he has not tested this.
Equipment
- An ipod
- A stun gun
- A Swiss army knife
- A surplus of other larger objects and weapons from various dimensions stashed away in one of the spaces between dimensions. These include binoculars, comic books, non-lethal melee weapons, bug spray, video games, a high-tech visor, various clothes, etc.
Training, Skills, and Attributes
- Knows rudimentary martial arts, but has no formal training.
- Has a natural talent for picking pockets, which he keeps up by practicing on himself almost daily.
- Capable of doing complex acrobatics thanks in part to taking up gymnastics as a child.
- Is highly flexible, agile, and has a high degree of stamina.
- Is a surprisingly good cook.
Physical Appearance: An average black panther with a thin frame and fairly basic clothes, along with grey eyes and a small stripe of white hair that looks like a skunk’s. His eyes will glow when he has a portal active (the bottom halves will glow purple when he has his purple portal active, while the top halves will glow white when his white portal is out), but otherwise his appearance is fairly unremarkable. He does occasionally change his hair style, however, and sometimes his entire species via alternate dimensions, when he feels like being different.
Clothes
- Spring/Summer clothes consist of a short-sleeve shirt, shorts, and either sandals or tennis shoes, depending on his current activity.
- Fall/Winter clothes consist of a short-sleeve shirt underneath a hoodie, baggy jeans, and either sandals or tennis shoes depending on the temperature and/or his current activity.
Bio: Born into a world that idolized superheroes like celebrities, Ashley spent much of his early life reading comics, watching tv shows, and playing games based on the exploits of the men and women who kept the general public from harm. And of these figures, none did he look up to more so than Horus, the Fiery Falcon and the public face of the International Super Hero Association’s New York branch. He was an inspiration to many, and his oft-repeated quote “anyone can be a hero” gave a young panther the drive and desire to become a hero himself. When he discovered his ability to create spatial portals, he was appropriately ecstatic, and began practicing with his powers in secret for years to come.
The very day he became 18, a legal adult and thus eligible for ISHA membership, he immediately walked into ISHA headquarters to apply. To his delight, Horus himself was the one looking over the new applicants, and Ashley felt that nothing could ruin such a perfect day. Until he was rejected. Stunned and confused, Ashley couldn’t believe what he was hearing. When asked why, Horus responded that they already had someone who could teleport, and do so instantaneously, making Ashley’s slower portals ‘superfluous’. And when Ashley tried to use Horus’ famous quote, the bird revealed that the line was nothing more than fluff created by the comics. Dejected and disillusioned, Ashley opened a portal to his room and left.
This might have been the end of it, had someone not burst into the room shouting at Horus just as Ashley closed the portal. His curiosity getting the better of him, he created a small portal on the ceiling of the office, eavesdropping on the conversation, from which he learned several unpleasant facts about his former hero, including the bird’s racist attitude towards felines. Anger welling up inside him, Ashley decided that Horus would pay for his cruel bigotry, and spent the next two years secretly harassing Horus through his portals, at first through pranks meant to aggravate and anger the bird before deciding that such juvenile actions wasn’t satisfying enough. Donning a flashy outfit and using the name “portal panther”, he began to call himself Horus’ greatest threat and began to commit small crimes expressly to lure the bird out into combat.
Soon though, his actions as Portal Panther attracted the attentions of a more dangerous villain who tricked Ashley into assisting him in building a doomsday device with the express intent of wiping the planet out. When Ashley realized what he had helped fuel because of his blind hate of Horus, he suffered a mental breakdown that was further compounded by the base where the device was located being found by several heroes, including Horus, who declared Ashley to be on par with the psychopath he had unwittingly assisted. Ashley simply stood there while a fight between the heroes and villain played out, frozen in horror at what he’d done while wishing over and over that he could live in a world like those of the comics he’d read as a child, where everything was perfect, and anyone could be a hero, and no one would reject you for being a feline.
So lost in his shock, he didn’t even realize it when he created a dimensional portal beneath himself for the first time, even as he slowly sank into it, until he was up to his neck in the tarlike pathway - by which point his energy had been drained to a point that he could barely struggle anymore, and he fainted as his head sank into the tar. When he woke, he found himself in the exact kind of world he had wished for, including an alternate version of Horus who had nothing but respect for felines. But despite having exactly what he wished for, the alternate Horus was a constant reminder of what he had done, and he found himself slipping into depression. He knew that he had to return home and set things right… but he was also afraid of facing what he had almost done, and of the possibility that he no longer had a world to return to.
Ultimately, once he had a measure of control over his dimensional portals, he used one to travel to a completely different world entirely, intending to search for a new place to call home. However, his dimensional travels left him in wonder at the many things he saw, and along the way his motive for traveling between worlds shifted from seeking a home to enjoying the splendors of the multiverse, and he’s been traveling through many, many dimensions and alternate realities ever since. And with his acquisition of immortality, he may be exploring the cosmos for a long, long time to come now.
Personality: Ashley is largely a fun-loving character with a desire to enjoy life in every way possible. He loves to pull pranks and generally annoy people with nonsensical antics, but he generally means no harm by his actions, mostly just doing them to get a reaction out of others. He can go too far on occasion, but in those instances he is quick to apologize and do what he can to make it up.
He is not entirely moral, however, and he has no issues with robbing banks or large chain stores when he needs the money, food, clothes, or whatever. Because of this, he has little issue with making friends with villains that he considers less ‘villainous’ than others, mostly drawing the line at murderers and psychopaths/sociopaths, and he has a habit of switching sides at a whim based on how much fun he thinks he’ll have, or if he finds himself working with someone who clashes with his personal moral compass.
Despite his unheroic nature, however, he finds himself making friends with both heroes and villains, sometimes even in the same dimension, due to a friendly and upbeat attitude… and the fact that he literally can’t be held in jail unless he wants to be, which he’s only too happy to remind people of if they try to arrest him, often in an annoying and unnecessary manner. He does prefer to avoid fighting when possible, however. He is also persistent, often going to great lengths to achieve his goals if necessary. This is helpful when people follow him into other dimensions, as he will feel responsible for allowing them to leave their home and will do what he can to return them home.
Despite these positive qualities, however, he is not without his own flaws, the biggest of which is his inability to deal with his past, which causes him to lash out whenever someone calls him “Portal Panther” or equates him to the kind of villain he despises. Though he will often not show any anger, and will always request people not do so once or twice, he will give no explanation as to why, and continuing to do so will cause him to react violently in rage. Due to his nature as a prankster and gadfly, however, people tend to push this button in retaliation for his antics when they discover it, not understanding the sensitive nature of the issue and thus often causing him to attack them seemingly without provocation.
He is also a bit of a pervert, though he normally hides this well enough that people tend to mistake his perverted comments as more trolling.
Strengths
- Is highly clever, with a tendency to mix his antics with genuine strategy when forced into a fight in a way that keeps opponents guessing as to what he will do next.
- Despite having no formal martial arts training, he is good at reading his opponents movements and reacting to their attacks well enough to keep himself alive. He also cheats.
- Despite flying into a rage when his past is brought up, this actually makes him even more dangerous due to him being able to keep his thoughts in check, allowing him to utilize strategy and tactics while trying to maim the unfortunate offender.
Weaknesses
- Despite his skill in combat, he is physically no stronger than any normal person of his size and stature, meaning that even low-tier supers and even non-supers can disable him if they can get in a good shot.
- He has a tendency to fool around when fighting normally, meaning he constantly leaves himself open to retaliation.
- Due to only being able to create two portals at a time, he tends to have more difficulties when outnumbered by more than two people.
- Is at a severe disadvantage when fighting people who can fly in an open arena, due to his portals requiring solid surfaces to be used.
Additional Notes
- He has noticed that he hasn’t been able to meet alternate versions of himself in his dimensional travels, but he does not know if he is incapable of doing so or if he’s just been unlucky in this regard. (it’s the former.)
- He has a tendency to sometimes drink large quantities of alcohol, and when drunk he acts even more ridiculous and perverted than normal.
