I was surprised this didn't happen honestly, but yeah - if she was able to take Twilight's magic and add it to her own, I'm not sure how they would have beaten her. For a while I thought maybe it was going to be the arc of the entire season, but I guess Twilight basically just being an earth pony with a horn would have made for a pretty dull season. :)
