So I purchased a friend's stock AK-74 Polish Tantal (5.45x39mm) and turned it into this. I tend to get odd looks at the range since most people there shoot either their hundreds of AR-15's/10's or bolt action, but thus far I think I've proven to be far more accurate with this AK than any of their shots. Lately I've been shooting off push-pins at 100meters with little difficulty. Personally I am enjoying the 5.45 more than I thought, extremely accurate with little to no kick.
Modifications for those interested:
FAB Defense VFR-AK Aluminum Rail System (purchased via Mako Group)
FAB Defense UAS-AK P Folding Buttstock (purchased via Mako Group)
Nikon MONARCH 3 German 4 Riflescope 1-4x20 / Nikon M-223 XR Mount
Magpul AFG
Hogue AK-47/AK-74 Rubber Grip with Finger Grooves
For those interested, most AK-47 and AK-74 parts are interchangeable to a degree, just double check before you purchase! I am not one for fancy flashlights or lasers on my rifle, so don't expect to see them on this.

Actually the 7.62 variant has been out of service for some time now. The 5.45 took over in the early 80's. The raised cheek mount is actually to view through the optic properly, otherwise you have the most awkward setup ever in looking through a scope. For iron sights, the regular stock is fine, but remember that a rail system of most types cannot properly fit on the rear cover (nor should they if you want to hold that zero) and are thus raised. Therefor you need to actually raise your buttstock up a bit to view through said optic properly.
The 7.62x39 is everywhere man :p In fact your 5.45 model is one of the first I've seen. I live in Tennessee, and everyone I shoot with that has an AK has the 7.62. They're so easy to get. SIG even models one of their AR's around the 7.62x39. (I used to sell these guns at a shop). You're right about the cheek mount, but most I shoot with only have fun with their AK's, and don't bother with accuracy like the cheek stock will help you get.
Not too shocked it's the first you have seen, most people tend not to read up on current Russian arms. The 5.45 was infamous during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The warlords and local fighters gave it the nickname of "The Poison Round" due to its wounding capabilities. Regardless, 7.62 was phased out of the Russian army a long time ago on their basic issue rifles, that doesn't mean it was a bad round. In fact, the Russians swapped to it since, much like the US found, you can carry more of it.
