If you don't mind me asking, how is this a bad business practice? As a fellow artist, seeing the files and how they are layered/put together would help increase my understanding of his process as an artist. Is your opinion sleighted like it is because you're afraid that people would be tempted to steal from his work?
Had to redo my comment since FA has a comment edit window? Really?
One, you'd be literally giving away your project files. This mitigates just about ALL legal action against someone that you can take if suddenly they do stuff you don't like.
"You were making illegal copies and selling these for profit?"
"No, the artist gave, me the files to do so."
And now that person is no longer in trouble.
I had a conversation with a friend about this the other day and here's a quote or two from him. He's really knowledgeable about this stuff.
Not to mention the legal ramification of it. If you did a fan art and you gave away the PSD file that can be used for print runs and someone decided to make prints of it and sell it behind your back and then ended up getting sued by the actual copyright/trademark holder, the scandalous individual can easily mitigate their legal liability by staying that you gave them the file to run prints (which is partially true). Then all of a sudden the copyright holder has a much bigger fish to fry.
[Slight variation of conversation regarding other Patreon issues in these brackets, back on topic after]
But giving out a print-capable file of a fan art will make you legally liable for copyright infringement simply because you knowingly provided a key component to a criminal enterprise.

Even high res files are a bad idea. Because once again, that person was literally given it for oh probably $10 worth of pledge. It has nothing to do with me being any sort of sleighted, People need to be aware that they're easily setting themselves up for huge problems. Once their project files are out there and in a way that they can be easily used [IE, high res versions there of or simply high resolution pictures,] it's MUCH more difficult to take legal action against criminals the likes of which who profit off of other people's work. In fact, with the project files, now those people can claim they made it themselves. How? Well they have the file, of course.
It's something people who make a patreon account really need to think about.
As for your learning of how the artist did it, I think you should instead be hopeful that more people make tutorial(s) & tutorial videos.

I Tottally agree with this.
it will be better to offer maybe a tutorial or a step by step (made with cptures of the process in diferent states of completition), than the PSD Files. Is just a bad scuse to say "seing th ePSD will help me improve as an artist", no way! that's not true if someone is bad drawer or painter, seing the original file won't help you as muchs as a tutorial. In fact, seing the process that close may affect yourstyle making you thing that the way of working of this artist is the correctone, when there are lots of ways of working.
Also giving original files (PSD, AI, CDR) to the client is already a non recomended action in the professional field. Those files are for the creator only, if the client whant's them, they have to pay extra (a lot extra), since they gain the power of modify that file made by the artist and publish, print or upload to anyplace claiming it was made by them or by the artist itself (if they made a bad modification, if they mess the picture... and they upload the final product to anywhere, it will still look like the product of the original artist, and it will be, relativelly... so the name of that artist will be afected by a messed work he didn't make.). You can offer the original file if you want, but you'll be lossing money and you wil end in the risk I mentioned.

so even if the original was 300 DPI and reduced to 100 or 75 dpi that will still be a problem? ik upi can make the pics bigger but will blur there lines so you cant do to much if its that small. also my work files are way to big send any ways that way I have to reduce the size of them. and im seeing if I can do videos of me working on the pics to show how I do stuff.
and thank you for the heads up on this.
