This and the following file are part of a project to create a full colour cover for issue 13 of a fanzine called "Planetary Stories". The editor asked me to do it, and base it on the theme of "luck". He suggested horseshoes, four leaf clovers, or rabbits feet. My first rough didn't inspire me, then I had the sudden inspiration of adapting a poster for the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey".
After the initial rough sketch, I firmed the lines I wanted and erased those that didn't contribute to the final form. Next came scanning. In Photoshop I boosted constrast, effectively turning penciled lines into inked.
The final colour version isn't qquite finished. When it is, I'll post it to my main gallery.

I haven't watched Dark Star in years, but as I remember it, the film was much influenced visually by 2001. It would almost have to be, given when it wsa made. This was before Star Wars and Star Trek movies I think. And Douglas Trumble wouldn't make Silent Running until he *made* it, obviously.
Sorry -- wasn't trying to sound persnickety. But oddly enough I did get e-mail from an engineer friend of mine who analyzed the piece as though were the painting of the Cistine Chapel. The lighting should have been from this direction or that direction, shadows to this way not that, etc. I pointed out that in addition to everything he found wrong, the shadows from the moons couldn't possibly fall on the part of Jupiter visible. I reminded him it wasn't an astronomical painting... JAGDC.
