Aky had been banished from her family group and was wandering when these civilized scientists abducted her. They took her to The Labs where she was genetically and physically altered for war. They replaced her bone structure with high grade metal unknown to us Earthlings. She then got into trouble and somehow a fire started in her quardrant. She went back to save some of the young 'experiments' and ended up having her left side burned badly. She had shown great potential to the scientists so they replaced the whole left side of her body and tail with biomechs. Most of her organs are now synthetic because of it. She was modified for battle uses. To be thrown into the fray and tear the shit out of the enemies. The one thing the scientists didn't count on was her stubborness and headstrong will. Even though she had been put into the most dismal of situations, she kept her mind and care for other creatures. She was put through so much pain but she didn't let it bother her.
That's what's happened to her.

I've lost a friend because she wasn't willing to help herself fix herself. I fight the temptation to contact her. I just want to know how she's doing but I know it's not right.

I have had a friend with a similar mindset. he would always call me to be taken out for pizza, or cinema, or else, and then he'd always complain how bad he does while drinking away my hard-earned coin... in the end I sent him to hell sotosay. hoping he would some day understand, and get his ass lifted instead of sucking social welfare dry...
I know how you feel. one wants to help but mustn't because it would make it worse.
