I'm not sure if it's helpful for you or not... but there are just TONS Of videos on Youtube for tutorials and painting demonstrations. Also, there's this. http://www.ctrlpaint.com/
No problem, always glad to help out after all. I know my GF Firetally had some trouble watching a few tutorials about a program she had called Black Ink, but she took a bit of time and I went over some of what was happening in the videos with her and she got the hang of matters.
What tool are you using? o v o Personally I use the brush tool to paint. I'll line it with brush with the "shade color" But it doesn't necessarily have to be one color, but I chose red because there was no background. You can use blue if you want it to look night time though and so on.
I usually use a very thick line but some people do it differently so it depends on the style you like.

For coloring on the same layer I start with the back hair by base(slightly darker than the color you want) coloring it with the brush but with the blending around 22. From there you can use your actual base color and draw the individual strands, and then just kinda do whatever works.
I then color, in order, the skin/face area, clothes, and bangs.
Adding random flings of hair after all that is also nice, I think o vo
And the finished product will look something like this! (but I'd refine it more if I were you lmaosobs)

I hope that helps. jv j There are lots of different styles and ways for painting so just keep messing around and see what works for you.
