as promised here is my simple solution to rig the shoulders in blender and have a better deform without the use of stretchy bones or drivers or shape keys

when i get up to the hands in an ACTUAL rig i will show you just how complex it can get. though i am a little bit arrogantly proud of the rig method i developed to stop the wrist from collapsing as it twists and the few bone drivers i made that allow the palm to flex just a bit
Chuckle, oh you don't have to convince me. Some old picture in one of my galleries depicts building the foot rig for the Cynder model in Softimage once upon a time. This links to that, this is constrained to those, this does a heel roll, that does a toe roll . . . ugh.

Interesting. Let me ask have you tried using both together? Using the disconnected clavicle bones along with the connected shoulder bones. The clavicle still drives the movement and the the shoulder bone would track the upper arm bone or something like that and presrve volume. I think I'll try that on my next rigging venture.
