I don't know much about digital colouring. How are you colouring now? From the looks I would assume you are working with only two layers -one for the foreground and one for the background - and without a filling tool.
I like the how you set a strong focus on the character by blurring the background. If the background/setting isn't very important one can do that to strongen the focus on the middle layer and foreground in my opinion. I think you have done that quiet well. Could be a little less blurry in the middle layer of the trunk, since it's closer and more important to the scene, but I can still easily recognize he's leaning at a tree and crying heart-wrenching. By the clothes he is wearing I immediately see pictures of an epic fantasy story or courtly literature of the late medieval before my eye. I really wonder what happened to your character.

Yeah... All of that is incredible accurate !! It's incredible how close you got by just assumptions !! You got everything right... And for a reason... There really isn't one... I was feeling down and felt like drawing a sad picture... Which is strange in me, as most of my pics are normally happy or pervy xD!

But yeah... I use 3 layers:
Lineout.
Character Color.
Background.
