I'm getting sick and tired of modern DLC practices across all gaming platforms.
Microtransactions and pushing content that while it may not be the case, feel like they were cut from the original game to make an extra few bucks with DLC.

Somehow I view all DLC as content removed from a game so game companies could make more money. That's why I usually read reviews and wait to see if it's worth paying for. I do agree they are taking this way too far. It takes the prestige out of unlocking that certain content if it's unlock able by other means. They're seeing other big names making bank off of this practice so they figure not paint themselves Grey and jump into the shark tank. Unfortunately, it's only going to get worse. Soon we'll all have to pay subscriptions just to play CoD or BF or any multiplayer game.
Lol, not true. Borderlands 2: TINY TINA'S ASSAULT ON DRAGONKEEP. Six plus hours of pure unadultered content of fun, hilarity, explosions, story, drama and more! Not to mention all of the other content for DL that 2K-Gearbox has put out for borderlands 2... All for reasonable prices and all lengthy to an extent. And at least two or more extra characters per title since borderlands 2. I can guarantee that you can play it for 100+hours consistently, let it go for a whole while and come back a month later and re-run everything and still be satisfied! Spent hundreds of hours on both console and steam versions of the game myself haha! It's one of the few game titles that has yet to disappoint actually.
Part of the inherant problem is the medium's on which games are released and how easy it is to update it. Oblivion was a great example. The infrastructure for a 7GB DLC wasn't necessarily there at the time, so they sold the DLC as add on disc to the game.
Games were GREAT back in the early years of PS1, Xbox, Gamecube. Because they had no way to patch or fix any errors. All of the work had to be DONE and finished before release. Today, with capitalism, money grubbing corporations, and timelines, companies are releasing games with unacceptable standards and relying on the community to point out the flaw's for them to patch anything. It's so easy for them to just release a 15MB patch you have to download before you play it next because of the ease and interoperability we have created with our "always on" internet type games. No one is holding the game makers to standard anymore because their margin of error has shrunk from 98% to 70% being a passing grade.
TL/DR: We have all achieved our childhood dream of becoming a game tester. Were just not getting paid for it.

On context of evolve, there was a HUGE hype and a ton of players played it for awhile... and then after a week or two, and when people realized DLC costs and their pay to win model.... Less than 3k people play it daily, that's less than left for dead 2. You'd think they would realize their mistakes.
I think it's a bit of devs wanting to make more money and gamers letting them get away with the 'pay to win' and DLC to have a full game business ploy. The way I personally see it, there was no out-cry soon enough against it to the point where it has become normal for companies to get away with all this DLC bullshit.
HEY! We've got a game coming out, but if you pay us a little more for this DLC we'll give you access to more of the game instead of making it a full game!

I ONLY believe in DLC/Expansions when...
A) a finished and final product is released, and then somewhere down the road, they have a great new idea they wished they had come up with back when they were originally developing it, thus they make it and pack it into an expansion for the game; Whether or not they charge for it is up to them in this case as far as my opinion, because the original purchase was already a full and finished product, in which case the DLC is the phone case to your smartphone, helping it last longer...
or B) As you mentioned, they wanted to include something, but were not sure if it would help sales or hinder them, and so they make the rest of the game as final and finished as they can and release it at a price PROPORTIONAL to the "Full Price" based on how much of the planned or expected content is there and how much is removed, and then if it sells well, sell the other part as DLC for the REMAINDER of the "Full Price".
Sadly, neither of these seem to be the case very often these days when DLC/Expansions are done. Back when I was a kid (and when everyone else had their shiny new PS1/N64/Dreamcast, if I wanted to expand my game, I inserted Sonic & Knuckles into Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (or if I was feeling very brave, Sonic the Hedgehog 2) and switched on my Sega Genesis.

Yeah.. I kinda read things before I actually checked the audio, haha. Yeah... Borderlands 2 did NOT disappoint for DLC, whereas Destiny... Fuck their shit, fuck Bungie's future, fuck destiny and Activision...
Activision was awesome for their BMX and tony hawk games way back in the day, and I had a massive hardon for tony hawk's skateboarding game on the dreamcast. It was quality and fun as all get out!
Bungie... Obvious is obvious, but now they're just putting out overhyped drivel. I sold my hard copy of destiny today, which I got as a birthday gift!!!!! Fucking birthday gift!!! A gift meant to bring my younger brother and I together... Sold it for fifteen US dollars. I cheered and told the poor sales person why I sold it to them and why I cheered. I am, in fact, going back there in an hour from now, just to buy something else! Maybe halo anniversary edition on 360...? Maybe a movie... Just... Anything that I know won't fuck me over... Like all of the deadspace games. I got all the needed content and I am content with the games as they are, much as DS3 was rather bland(you see all the shitstorms coming except a few things ;) )... Stuff like all the previous halo games, were all epic! You didn't get blind sided with "must pay to see the rest of this, ah-ah-ah!"
Hell, I'll stick with Borderlands 2 and pre-sequel(when I buy it on steam), with all their DLC, as you've likely seen similar comments I've made earlier, tiny Tina's assault on dragonkeep. I cried, I laughed, I said "how about 'SHUT THE HELL UP MORDY!'" And I had a few tears run down my eyes when things coalesced... It was a DLC that came with the GOTY Ed, and made things final for some in the storyline. And all the other DLC were microtransactions that didn't make you feel as if you were digging into your pockets for some lost hundred dollar bills... A couple of dollars apiece! I laughed as I coughed up the $20 for all the missing DLC I didn't have before, and I laughed as I played them all! In fact, that game should be setting an example for the future of gaming industries around the globe... And it took them a year to finalize all the awesome DLC, and only six months to find that their fanbase had grown exponentially! Still tens of thousands of people playing 2 and 1, and now hundreds of people are consistently playing pre-sequel! Hell, if I still had it, I'd be playing it!
Thanks for letting me rant, and I concur with you on the frustration of those fuckers...

WOW
It was bad when they had on disk DLC......
It is really really really bad that they are ADVERTISING it x.x
And it's EA's old CEO... he is now ranking in HUDGE bucks as a consultant for other companies. He basically said a few years ago his goal was to have games cost AT LEAST 90~100$ a pice by 2015.... and they do now, if you want the whole game.... and he wants to push to make them cost even more
This one guy is responsible for so much bull shit in the gaming industry right now, hell it's if bull shit grab for money it's probably his idea....
This guy needs dragged out into the street in south Korea some where and let the crowds have at him. lol
He may just single handily ruin the gaming industry.

Somehow I can't seem to disagree with you... Other than maybe a gag order placed on him for his idiocy... Games should be effectively affordable, like housing... And spaceships eventually... But spaceships is another story altogether... People shouldn't be listening to such assholes whose only objectives in life is to "rake in dough" and "make people miserable with overpriced DLC"... If I ever see someone suggest that it is a good idea, I'll beat them...
Simply put, I fucking hate day 1 DLC, especially "on disc" DLC where the content is actually IN the base game's data, but locked behind a paywall instead of the traditional "beat this section to unlock this item". It does nothing more than artificially inflate the cost of the game!
Now, of course, DLC is fine if it's for a game that has already been out for a fair amount of time, at the least 3 or 4 months, maybe a bit less if it's minor DLC like extra skins or a single map, but if we're talking like a map pack or a new campaign, then give it about half a year.
As for micro-transactions, leave that shit for free-to-play games! It's fine if you're throwing a couple bucks down on an otherwise free game for like a few extra in game stuff that'd otherwise take hours to earn by yourself, that's not the worst thing, and sometimes, when you make a purchase like that, it'll disable advertising in the game, so that's a plus if you're annoyed by that stuff like I am. Just as long as you don't go crazy and spend like $50,000 to unlock everything in some random war game.
The whole idea of DLC is to basically be a modern version of the "expansion packs" that some PC games had back in the day. Your favorite game has a new disc in store that adds a bunch of new stuff? All you need is the original game disc and you're all set! DLC's like that, only downloadable as the term "downloadable content" implies. Best of all, it's no longer exclusive to PCs thanks to consoles these days having HDDs or some other form of internal storage to make this possible. Before that, the only console expansion I can name off the top of my head was GTA London on the PS1! That worked by disc swapping if I recall. You don't need to swap discs for DLC, and that's the good thing.
TL;DR: DLC is fine if it's only for content that isn't already in the game's disc/install directory or cut from the game to make it more expensive. It should be for actual expansions!

Not ALL DLC is bullshit... 2K Games and GearBox seem to have been doin their shit right the last few years, what with Borderlands and all. They've been popular enough that when they offer the Season Pass, give them a year, and you actually see developments over the course of 6-12 months after the release of a game. Hell, buy Borderlands GOTY ed, you get all the relevant DLC for it; buy Borderlands 2, on-sale on Steam, for maybe $5-10, and buy all the DLC, like Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragonkeep, for only $30 total. As a fan myself, you get toooooooons of hours. Hell, I have almost 200+ hours on both games on both 360 and Steam, lol. Compared to Destiny, which I have well-over 100 hours, and got bored within a month... Borderlands will make you keep coming back for MORE every time, because they don't bullshit you on the FUN, and hilarity.
every game I have ever played that had DLC I ran into uber twinks that bought the best of everything and pwn'd my ass JUST because they could, kill-stealing and over-damaging every chance they got JUST to be PRICKS.
I do not DLC. I have better things to waste my money on, since I had to earn my money to buy the god dam game to begin with

Lol, you think you're the only one? I have a friend who has gear that GEARBOX gave him for being an admin. He kept running me through things to try and get my shot level 72 and all, but I only play when he's online, so it's always a bit one sided. I always have to hide and look for hidden areas. I waste my money as I will, so long as I save enough effectively each paycheck, if possible... Maybe the difference between us is that I wait for sales, maybe? With games like Borderlands, it's not that you're "too weak" it is that you need to level up, or limit what levels people are allowed to bring into the match, your load. It is not their fault. Kill Stealin can only be called in maybe pvp and SOME other PVE games...
Eh... Call me a borderlands fanboy, they did their DLC shit the RIGHT way, and they didn't release NEW stuff, much less announce it, until a good few months AFTER, and season passes seem to be well-off on their borderlands games, as of yet. As I've said before, stuff like Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragonkeep, and if you buy the GOTY editions, you get those extra characters... not to mention a set of compelling storylines that don't leave you feeling.... "Meh..." but rather leave you feeling "OMG THAT WAS A GOOD STORY! I WANT MORE!" In fact: you could put Borderlands into a series of novels and be satisfied with how Jack becomes a power hungry monster, and how the vault hunters, and Tina and friends, all set out on shutting him down... or how Moxxie is a black ops bartender bent on bending over and all, hah.
see.....for dlc...i dont like it when it comes out with the game. cause thats ridicoulous that we should have to pay more all at once.
now if they make some updates to the game, later on, like. a whole new world, or a bunch of new guns. then maybe ya....but....dlc should stay cheep. 5 bucks or less. 10 bucks is pushing it because then its reaching a point of :"i could just go buy a cheep game for this much money instead of getting more stuff for this one.

"Season pass" type DLC, imo, is just capitalizing on a market created by blind loyalists. I don't think it's an inherently bad thing cos I've seen some good "deals". From my perspective it's alot like these "YCH" auctions, not a bad idea to start with but ended up getting abused and whored out to the point of creating a feeling of resentment towards artists and developers.
One offender that pissed me off pretty fucking well was "The Crew", season pass holders are granted early access to the new content before non-season pass holders. Which is all fine and dandy, imo, a nice little perk ya know? The problem that arose from this scenario is that Ubisoft made the DLC available for purchase the same day SP holders got their early access, and blocked your ability to access the content you just bought until the public release deadline. And nowhere do they even make the attempt to mention in the content description that the content won't be available until a certain date, I had to find out by perusing the game's forums, there just isn't any reasonable mention anywhere.
Now, I think an honorable mention would be Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon series. Other than the shenanigans they pulled with the tokens in FM5, they've done honorable enough with their season pass deals. Ultimately with season pass you'd save alot of money over buying all the cars or car packs individually, plus you get a bonus car each month that's not available to non-season pass players. I think SP was also given Storm Island and the Furious 7 car pack; but I won't swear to it.
Forza also has "Day one" and "V.I.P." DLC, which I don't really get the marketing idea behind day one DLC because even months later you still get the cars for free with the game if you buy it new.
But honestly, I don't subscribe to season pass even with Forza. I ain't going to fork out money for something when I don't know what I'm getting, and the original Forza Horizon was a good example as to how big of a waste I personally felt the season pass would have been if I had bought it, cos through out the entire DLC season for the original Horizon there wasn't a damn fucking car I remotely wanted.
