The background is about as simple as you can get yet lends so much to the movement to the characters here. Great work!

Thank you! 8D I was originally going to go with transparent but ended up with a brown square on the background layer behind the wolf due to canvas resizes, then I decided to use it (with some changes). Glad it was successful! ^^

i was thinking of him recently as i am writing a thing about witches and their familiar spirit creatures. just so happens there are six named after chess figures so indeed one of them is also a "rook" XD. neither a raven or a castle though lol. he is a muse. a 2d living spirit that moves along walls. i was half inspired by the a recent Doctor Who episode. lol. the muse is sort of stuck in a wold as if between the solid behind him and an invisible wall in front in which he is a 3d being but from the 3d world appears flat. sort of like how an animated character can appear to have a 3d body and turn and jump and walk but be on a flat surface. he is a living work of art and can even enter stories and dreams and virtual worlds and realities. he acts as sort of the spirit guide in a weird way.

Cool to see a fairly realistic coyote and wolf running in the same frame. I like the contrast in their anatomies.
