I see this as more of a "oh @#$% I found a Fiend and I'm not at all prepared for it and I can't run away and I'm going to die." kind of reaction.
Which can be attributed to the fact that I've played SMT:III, and you don't see Fiends coming, they just make you dead. (Unless you're crazy prepared or have prior knowledge of them.)
